That's one of the worst graphics I've ever seen for a game.

As frustrating as he can be at times I think we're going to miss JQ next year. I think Oats wants his teams to have the nasty edge to them that old school Big East teams had, and guards from JQ's neck of the woods always seem to have that attitude.

Technically I think he could come back for his Covid year - but given his age I think they are planning on him being gone

Bradley is a NY PG so i'm sure he has some of that in him. Just need to get it out of him.

game is not sold out

top 3-4 rows in most sections still available, although that's not that many tickets really, probably less than 1000.

Torvik expected score tonight using various filters

No filter - all stats all season vs all teams
- Alabama by 14, Total 134 (74-60)

Stats over last 12 games
- Alabama by 20, Total 142 (81-61)

Stats from SEC games only
- Alabama by 25, Total 141 (83-58)

Current Line - Alabama by 13.5, Total 142.5

Seems like the line and the total don't match up very well. Those numbers equate to Alabama winning 78-65.

State's total points scored vs Top 50 Defenses to date
52 vs Utah (N) (0.844 PPP)
63 vs Alabama (0.878)
53 @ Tennessee (0.851)
63 @ Auburn (0.891)
59 vs Tennessee (0.925)
59 vs Florida (0.960)

They haven't hit 65 points vs a Top 100 team all season and they are going to against us tonight? I think this one slipped through the cracks. They basically adjusted the total to more recent performance but the line is based on full year to date.

The Athletic: How Brandon Miller, Alabama basketball’s star freshman, is mixing promise, production

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Practice runs along — and we do mean run because, at Alabama, there is not much idling in two hours of a January afternoon work session — and nothing extraordinary happens. It’s almost easy to lose Brandon Miller in the red blur of action and effort.

Until.

Until during an otherwise innocuous drill, the freshman gets the ball at the top of the key. Crosses over to his right, crosses over to his left with a little head bob and zips to the rim, leaving defenders flat-footed in his wake.

Until during defensive work against the scout team that is not going terribly well for the red team, Miller forces a turnover with quick hands, follows it up with a block at the rim, and then forces another turnover in the lane.

Until a few minutes later, he dribbles and fakes a stepback for a 3. No one bites on the move. So he does it again with a little more sizzle, and this time, there’s just a fraction of a nibble, a brief enough hesitation that allows Miller to find a few inches of clarity. Swish.

Until, on the very next possession, after a scout team turnover, Miller flies down again and squares up for a transition 3.

As he launches, someone in the gym yells, “Here comes another one,” and a manager sitting courtside mutters, “Boom,” calling the make with the same arrogance Jay Wright used on Kris Jenkins’ national championship-winner in 2016.

Because, as it turns out, everyone in the gym is that certain when it comes to Brandon Miller.

quote:

Yet Oats credits Alabama’s turnaround to Miller’s approach to the game as much as his ability. Oats believes last year got away from the Tide because they lacked leadership and cohesiveness, and even more because a few players worried more about their own stock than the team’s.

Miller is blissfully disinterested in all of it. He admits he’s dreamed about the draft, but is decidedly not tunnel-visioned about it. Asked how he’d spend his first paycheck, he hems and haws. He already bought his dream car with an NIL deal. A big fan of muscle cars, he tools around campus in a souped-up 2022 Dodge Charger, purple, tricked out with speakers and lights. It’s maybe the only time Miller begs to be noticed. “I mean I’ll sign autographs, or whatever,’’ he says, “but I’d rather just talk to someone. Be me, you know?” Me in this case being the player who drove the hour to Birmingham uninvited to hang out with the managers at a TopGolf outing, and who likes to snap a selfie with Saban every time he sees him.

Great article. I wish there were more decent sports journalism like The Athletic.

I couldn't agree more. The attitude JQ brought when he came into the Arkansas game's good example.

We started off looking pretty sluggish. It was a huge game for Arky, their crowd was into it and Anthony Black wasn't missing an opportunity to amp up the hostile vibes.

JQ came in and immediately made a point of giving back more attitude than Black was dishing. Seemed to really "wake up" the whole team.

I was toying this morning with the idea of getting tickets and driving down tonight. But, my daughter, who is my basketball partner, is sick, so I opted not to. Hope the place is packed out though.
