I need to stop but I keep letting “what if we go full 2018 Nova?” creep into my head

What is it that convinces other programs that Tuscaloosa is the go-to destination for their hires? I expect this with football, but now it's happening to basketball too. I mean we have had a nice little run so far under Oats for sure but how many assistants spend like 10-15 years at a top program before getting HC opportunities? Happens all the time.

Nate has to get a recruiter. That’s top priority

I think Oats’ unique offensive style and philosophy probably intrigues other programs wanting to get a piece of that more so than assistants at other programs. Honestly kind of the same thing that attracts football programs to assistants that might have insight to the Saban system. Hasn’t worked out much in football, we’ll see if it works for other basketball programs.

Bama can beat San Diego St with just a so so night from 3 point land. I would rather the 3s rain down in the elite 8 game.

I hope that they rain down in both games.

I'm sure the style of play and how rapidly it turned our program around is a big part of it. I guess I'm just looking at it from the standpoint of all the guys who worked for all time great coaches like Roy, Izzo, Coach K, etc. for years and years before being hired away. It's a bit unusual for a basketball coach to spend 4 years as a P-6 assistant before getting hired even by a mid-major. Typically basketball coaches either toil around in relative obscurity at small schools while slowly climbing the HC ladder or they spend like a decade or more as an assistant at top tier programs before getting an opportunity to run their own. Historically the Saban assistant hiring model of "we can't beat him, so let's hire someone who may know how he beats us" isn't all that applicable to college basketball.

Fairley Dickinson's coach was just hired by Iona after Pitino left. It's a gamble IMO. We'll see how it works out.

How many of those guys turned down opportunities like a GA Southern or Arkansas St. hoping for a bigger job?

More than a couple I'm sure. That's a good point. Some of them may not have wanted to give up maximum job security to gamble on themselves at places with fewer resources.

Oats is not really a touchy Feely guy that can motivate guys to play for Bama as well as other coaches probably can.
He definitely needs that guy who's a great salesman

Absolute unit. Fantastic recruiter, relates really well to kids from everywhere (he went through the foster care system). Unique connections in certain areas - he recruited Canadians Bediako, Primo, and Ambrose-Hylton to Alabama. He recruited most of the primary contributors on this year's squad.

How good he is with Xs and Os remains to be seen as a HC, but he's been with Oats a long time so I don't expect that to be a big issue.

Really solid hire. I was hoping to keep him around another year.

Arkansas State has hired Alabama assistant Bryan Hodgson, source told @Stadium. Hodgson was in mix for other jobs, but this one fits. Has been with Nate Oats at Buffalo and in Tuscaloosa and is responsible for recruiting majority of the roster.

Hate losing Hodgson, but good for him. He will definitely be missed here.
