We typically recruit pretty intelligent players on and off the field. Our defense has at times guys who couldn't do things athletically. But, we were rarely out schemed and looking so out of sorts or undisciplined until Golding got here. So, when I see Terrell Lewis, a very good player and SEC All Academic player, say the play calling and communication from the DC was lacking I put a lot of credence in what he's saying.

I know this thread was designed to stir the pot but it is always fun to read the first post and know that everything after is going to be a shite show.

Like Bama's defense ever since Pete Golding took over coordinating it and like the ILBs since he's been coaching them.

Meanwhile Saban continues to employ Golding and there isn't a fricking thing you can do about it.

You know damn well Golding is on shaky ground. Name me one other DC surrounded by 3 other DCs on the same staff. I'll wait.

Right, Saban only hired all those people so he could replace Golding, rather than him being a collector of great minds.

Not much you can do when people read what they want out of a quote other than point out their ignorance.

Terrell Lewis never said anything of the sort.

He literally said "from the top, down" which implicates everyone. It does not heap more blame on Golding than any other person. It implicates literally everyone in the hierarchy equally.

Reading, amirite?

All 3 of those guys are failures at the coordinator level or higher, 2 at DC and 1 at HC. Two were fired for not getting it done, and one was let go at FSU and didn't have any good DC offers then or now.

Golding coached the #3 defense in 2019 in the SP+ while smashed with injuries?

What's your point? Do you even have one? Is it just that Golding sux in your estimation and you'll take any opportunity to beat that drum, even if it's nonsensical?

Charlie Strong's tenure as a head coach means absolutely zero. You sound like an LSU fan trying to minimize Strong's addition to the staff. You know as I know Strong is an elite defensive coordinator. Sunseri and Kelly are both former DCs who coached in Power 5 football and veteran coaches so they are a source of knowledge for Golding that few other DCs in Power 5 football have.

Top down in this sense implicates the DC who is responsible for the overall defense. Therefore, Golding is held to a higher standard than any position coaches on the defensive side and he's definitely held to a higher standard than the players.

Lastly, Golding sucks!

Golding blew dick in 2019 and anyone that defends him is delusional or trolling. Like it or not, he's got another chance in 2020 to turn it around, and I hope he does. But his arse is going to get judged on every snap on defense and rightfully so.

Are you kidding me? There's one standard at Alabama and everyone is held to it.

Your opinion in this case is trash.

The last time Charlie Strong coordinated a defense, Michael Jackson was still alive and Nick Saban had zero championships at Alabama.

EDIT: My apologies. MJ died 6 months before Strong last coordinated a defense.

but there are rational arguments to be had in his defense.

Just like there are rational arguments to be had against him.

Not sure why it has to be so black white.

There were clearly challenges with injuries to such an extent that no Saban era DC before him had seen. That is fact. Not debatable.

Another fact is that that 2019 Bama defense wasn't nearly as bad as many around here act. Stats back this up.

Something that is also not really up for argument is that our tackling was awful last year relative to what we have seen under other DCs.

And it is a fact that we were pretty awful on 3rd downs in 2019.

Do we have to get so offended, outraged, and outright ugly at each other when any of these arguments are made? The answer is no.
