could be, couldve been, whatever. They worked out together when RCW was a freshman.

At the time of the Saban paraphrase, he was referring to his on-field performance, though you’re right, he had off field issues as well. Evidently, he had effort issues too.
It’s a trade off, the HC has to make the determination if it’s worth it or not.
Not addressing you, but another complaint somewhere in this thread or another that CKD made him a captain, implying that he was a bad example to his teammates. DeBoer did not make him a captain, he was voted as such by his teammates. CKD insists, and I believe him because his teammates also insist, that Ryan works very hard at his craft and in practice. That doesn’t erase his game behavior. (I haven’t checked it out but I accept what y’all say the film shows.)

Someones in his ear. Doesnt block on run plays and is no better now than he was last year,
I believe some time on the pine might do him good,

I don’t either. Devonta has very large and incredible hands. But Ryan is faster and much more elusive. He’s a unique talent As far as I know, there is no one like him in college or pro ball.
I don’t know what to say, bad effort is an issue, but don’t know the best response. The only thing I would strongly disagree with some about, is that he fears contact. I do reject that. He knowingly takes some massive hits to catch the ball and remarkably hangs on. PR is one of the most vulnerable and dangerous roles in sport. Having said that, I understand the complaints of many. I just don’t like harping on something that I can’t change, though I can’t begrudge those who want to and I sympathize with them.

I watched it. Brooks shows a pretty egregious example of Ryan dodging blocking a safety on a run play, Ryan kinda giving up on a route on a scramble drill that Keelon threw to him that almost got picked (it was the one Keelon threw pass the LOS), and of course the drops.
He doesn't show him giving low effort on every play he's not the main target like some people are seeming to believe. Yes Ryan needs to do better than what was shown on those particular plays but to generalize that he's giving no effort if he's not the target based on a few plays seems extreme.

Michigan is talking about benching Underwood too. There is something to giving these kids tons of money.
I saw a podcast that had an NFL player saying that "players dont get worn out, they get paid out." They give these guys a fortune at such an early age and we shouldn't be surprised when they dont have any dog left in them.

He might be faster in the long run, but Smitty has incredible acceleration.

Underwood is utter garbage.
Williams causes enough of an issue for coverage that it's hard to bench him

To add insult to injury, the 4 best HCs in cfb right now, all used to coach at Alabama under Saban, and we could've had 3/4 of them.
- Kirby
- Cristobal
- Cignetti
- Kiffin
I see people are staring to leave Lanning off the list
Kirby has won two more regular season games than Deboer since 2024. Plus he has yet to win a 12 team playoff game, was embarrassed by Notre Dame, is having too many close calls against shite teams and is 1-2 vs Deboer. He's not the 2022 Kirby anymore and this board would have turned on him in 2024.
And our fanbase was shitting all over Cristobal two short years ago like he was Dubose 2.0. Suddenly, he can buy players and and now he's Saban 2.0 because the ACC is that difficult? The jury is still out on Kiffin unless he has somehow magically turned a corner as people forget he would blow a team out one week and two weeks later, he'd get embarrassed by the worst team in the league (with Jaxon Dart) or a 7-win Arkansas or a Baylor or a Texas Tech. Let's see if that trend continues before melting about not hiring a guy who had a tendency to shite tje bed in games he should win by 4 touchdowns.
Cignetti is the only one on that list who'd be a significant upgrade over Deboer at this point. The rest, we'd be in the same boat bitching "we should have hired Deboer".

Until we go full bore on NIL, I kinda feel like the coaching situation is moot
Posted on 9/8/26 at 8:29 am to Pastor Mike
We are going to have to face it, we do not have people with 100 million laying around to spend on football. This limits us in the NIL spending war.
Till some cap on money is put in place we are second tier. Unless you have millions laying around yourself. No one is coming to us any more just because we are BAMA.

I wish he would sort it out too, but at the end of the day he is one of the 2 or 3 most dangerous players in college football with the ball in his hands in open space. It's like tackling smoke.
There's never an excuse for lack of effort, but if you can point to a decent reason for lack of effort I think 110 degree temperatures are a good place to start.
I've noticed on a lot of RCW drops, it's a ball coming right at him. It's like he struggles with catching the ball that's coming at his face and doesn't know how to get his hands sorted. Moving left, right, or down field he has shown the ability to pluck it out away from his body- but if the ball is going to hit him he has a tendency to try to cradle it in with his chest.
I think it's a two fold problem and I don't think it has anything to do with contact (or avoiding it). The first one is just confidence. A big deal has been made about his drops and how he's work all offseason on it, ditched the gloves, etc. When you go out and drop another one it's right back in your head. "Don't drop it" is the prevailing thought when a guy really shouldn't be thinking anything at all with the ball in the air. At this level that part should just be the natural athletic motion you've done your whole life. It's like a golfer with the putting yips or a catcher that all of the sudden can't throw it back to the pitcher.
So I think confidence and overthinking is the foundation of his issue and the secondary issue is just mechanical and concentration. Those balls right at him he tends to struggle more with than plucking one away from his body- and he's so eager to run after the catch and make a huge play that he just doesn't always look the ball in. He's made some absurd catches in traffic over the years where a big play wasn't on the table and he just needed to catch it to extend the drive.
I think the good news is that he did catch a ball or two after the second drop- so it's not an uncurable case of the yips. I wish he wouldn't have said anything about the gloves, because in a dry environment they absolutely help. There's a reason every receiver in the league wears them. Now that he's made a big deal about not wearing them it's just another thing people will focus on and generate more noise if he puts them back on. I think some strong coaching should have come into play there. You've got to pull the kid aside and tell him it's not the gloves making you drop the football man.

Nope, if he dropped one I don’t remember. I’d compare Ryan to maybe a Jameson Williams. I remember him dropping a few balls, but not nearly as many as Ryan has. I could see him having that type of impact if he improves. But he’ll never be as dependable as Smity. That dude was clutch.

I think Lane is one of the better offensive minds out there. HOWEVER, he's like a schizophrenic person who's doing well on their meds but every now and then don't take their meds and then do crazy shite.
Lane is prone to doing insane stuff from time to time that make ZERO sense and come back to blow up in his face. He's incredibly cocky when he's won nothing as a HC. No SEC titles and no NCs.
Moreover, the dude is a man whore. Some schools might put up with that but that would never fly in Tuscaloosa, as the HC. That doesn't even take into account that he eviscerated bridges in Tuscaloosa. Unless certain people in Tuscaloosa die, he would never, ever be the HC at Bama.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but if we go down to Baton Rouge and lose to Kiffin in his first year at LSU, the should coulda questions about Kiffin & UA will get much louder.

Definitely.
Wearing gloves was not the reason for his drops last year.
Deciding not to wear gloves all of the sudden is unwise. Gloves help 100%.

The problem is he doesn’t trust his hands, jumps, and tries to body catch balls that he’d be better served staying on the ground, catching with his hands, and using his quick twitch to make whatever play is available after or protect himself against contact.
Since he leaves his feet so much, he puts himself in positions to get speared and dislodged from the ball.
He is just not a technically developed receiver despite three years of college coaching. Whatever they’re doing to unlearn the bad habits is not surviving contact with real game action. I choose to believe this is being coached against but he just can’t stop doing it. I hope that is true.

Whole heartedly agree with your post and apologize for nitpicking: DeBoer is actually 3-0 vs Lanning.
