I know it was Nebraska HS football but Thomalla put up some gaudy numbers. His physical ability is undeniable. Before anyone scoffs about it being Nebraska high school competition, Shaun Alexander put up very gaudy numbers in HS too in Kentucky. Sometimes numbers DON'T lie.
He won't play at all this year except in for blow out games late in the 4th or unless Mack or Russell are hurt. He'll eventually get his shot a year or two down the road.

Dude can flat out play.
I don’t think he has all the gifts of a Tua but that guy is going to win games at the college level for sure.

Not exactly going out on a limb on any of those except maybe QB Reese

Barring injury, QB Reese will start. He’s somewhat inexperienced but the guy flies to the ball and a solid tackler. Played a really good game at A Day.
His old man was solid for the Aubs years ago.

Ive heard lots of talk about Ivan Taylor getting in the starting lineup.

“From all reports”, it sounds like we should have some quality competition/depth on defense.
DL: Thompkins, Green and Simmons to start, with Ed Hill, Steve Mboumoua, Faga and Beaman to spell them is very solid on paper. Beaman was supposed to be a key contributor last year before going down for the year vs FSU. I’ve got pretty high hopes for him and Steve M. Faga has created some buzz this offseason and last - high motor guy. The Bandit group probably gives me the most worry of the spots across the front.
Wolf/OLB: Pierre is a known. Justin Hill looks to be a VERY good player too. The freshmen Matthews is a big kid and has lots of potential. Other freshman Xavier Griffin likely to get looks at OLB in pass rush situations as well.
ILB: I see Woodson and Reese as “starters” but competition is intense in this room. Metz and Sanders have gotten a lot of reps and apparently have shined. Duke Johnson, Cayden Jones and Xavier Griffin are wild cards here. I feel any combination of these guys have a “serviceable” floor.
CBs: strong across the board. Zabien and Lee Jr may be the best tandem in CFB this year. Strong “starter quality” depth behind them.
Husky: Red Morgan is experienced and a pretty damn good player. I’ve seen Mincey and McDonald mentioned here as well. Mincey was quietly a solid player for us last year. Jireh Edwards likely to be involved here as well.
FS/SS: Sabb and Hubbard is great starting point here. We know what we have with them. Taylor will for sure see action at one of the two spots this year. Dre K Jr. a wild card here who could earn some minutes. Same with Jireh Edwards but if he’s taking reps from the aforementioned, this guy is likely a first round NFL draft pick type talent at safety.
All in all, I feel good about the defense. Wommack and that group need to show out this year. I like his scheme/philosophy overall, but I’m not crazy about the Bandit position; Regularly dropping a 265+ lb pass rush guy in space or to the flat is… stupid. Having Dez Zulu line up at 3/4i is a recipe for disaster. Saw it multiple times in ADay.

I think the secondary is peak Saban level, the LB group will be fine if Woodson is what they’re saying he is and while the DL lacks superstar talent we have enough solid contributor types to be a quality group.
What’s unique with this roster this year is that in a NIL/portal era I think most teams lack depth and the elite teams have spent money on big names whereas we have elite depth and “good” starters in the front 7.

Spring camp is over so we're removing the sticky. Great work everyone.

Obviously, injuries are the wild card here and can change things in a hurry but I feel like it's going to be a lot harder to run on Bama this Fall, Picked up some really good DE.DT types. The season will prove things but I feel like Thompkins is an upgrade from James Smith. The kid from Oregon will see a lot of snaps. Big dude.
Steve Mboumoua looked good in the A Day. He'll see a lot of snaps. Of course, London Simmons and Isaiah Faga are back.
Not saying this year's defense will be dominant but I think they'll be improved. They were pretty good last year. They could be very good this year.

Not sure if its true or just something I've convinced myself is true, but I just don't think Red Morgan is that good in coverage. In my memory, he gets lost a lot in coverage and gets beat. I love the rest of the DBs, just not sold on him.

Love when he blows up those wide receiver screens. Just absolutely demolishes the blocker.

Red Morgan is a vicious hitter.

Every team needs a Red Morgan. He may not be the most gifted db but he brings exactly the attitude you want to see in a game, fearless.
If you had 11 players on defense that plays with his mentality, offensively most team would dread it by the end of the game.
