Only 1 person could screw this up IMO......Pete Golding

Not this bull shite again.

I will freely admit that after the Ole Miss game last year, I was completely off the Golding bandwagon, after regularly defending him on here throughout 2019. I thought if he couldn't put it together with the talent and experience we had on defense for 2020, he was toast ... and the early returns didn't look good.

But lo and behold, after Ole Miss we actually improved in multiple areas, and by the end of the year we were a pretty salty defensive team (Florida notwithstanding). I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be at least as good, if not better, this year.

I'm not as worried about Ole Miss this year as many others seem to be. I think if we'd played Ole Miss at the end of the season, we'd have held them to 20 points or less. I don't believe they'll have 390 yards passing, or two 100-yard rushers, or a TE with almost 200 yards receiving this year against us.

Nick Saban told you all you needed to know about Pete by retaining him for another year.

Yep. You're right. That told us that there wasn't a single school in the country at any level that wanted to take Pete Golding off our hands, so Coach Saban couldn't unload him off to someone else, as he's done the other morons like him he's had to get rid of in the past.

I don’t get the hate anymore. The game has shown that it has changed dramatically.

Alabama was 13th in the nation in scoring defense last year.

Our only other defensive coordinators under Saban (who were/are head coaches):

Kirby: #18
Pruitt: #67

Just stop already.

Yea, we got better last year as the year went on and the youth played more.

I dunno how good Pete is, but I think last year's progression showed that 2019 was an implosion because of personnel, youth and probably some of Pete's youth/inexperience all thrown into a stink bomb stew.

This year is pretty big for him, though, because this unit should be elite. No excuses for slow starts and random games where we look totally lost.

Not only that, but this year he needs to improve his playcalling with blitz packages........

Also their is depth pretty much everywhere this year. No injury excuses like 2019 if someone goes down. (Except maybe Will Anderson)

I'm not convinced that Henry Too'too'o will be able to dislodge Jaylen Moody from the Mike spot. Everyone seems to be penciling HT in as the starter, but he's only gonna have fall camp to learn the defense / calls in any sort of live situation.
doesnt matter if he does, if he's second team it's just gonna make our team better because we should have less drop off 1s to 2s. Too'too'o is a really good lb

Agreed. It's a big addition. It makes the competition even more fierce. Also gives young guys like Demouy Kennedy and Deontae Lawson an opportunity to get more experience in the program without having to be thrown into the fire too soon. That's why I felt bad for Shane Lee two years ago. He was thrust into a starting role before he was ready.

And besides what he brings to the table himself, he will be pushing other players to improve to keep him from replacing them. Any time you can bring in a couple of new talented people from the outside, it can ratchet up the intensity.

This reminds me of last year, when a lot of folks were saying Bryce would supplant Mac. I realize HT has two years of college experience vs. 0 for Bryce at this time last year, but I still think the comparison is valid.

Of moody plays at the same level as Mac did last year, then our D should be just fine!

How can a team complete a 180 if they haven't even played a game together?

This is not meant as a criticism, just a cold, hard truth: if the defense struggles, regardless of who wins the job at Mike, with the talent at that position, then there needs to be a serious conversation about Golding's future. In 2019, the excuse was the injuries and starting 2 freshmen inside that weren't ready. In 2020, Moses was back but wasn't healthy and could make the calls but not the plays. In 2021, he knows he's going to have some fresh faces, some experience, and a shitload of athletic ability and talent. If he can't make it work, the problem is in the mirror.

I wanted Golding gone after Ole Miss like most other people but I do think he has received some unfair criticism because it took people a while to realize the landscape of college football has changed.

Shutouts and low-scoring games can still happen but the expectation level of the defense needs to be adjusted. We're not playing 2011 SEC-style offenses anymore.

This is the year to prove if he's the real deal or not, I believe it's quite the testament that Saban has hung with him for this long.

Yep. We were third in the conference in total defense and first in the conference in scoring defense last year, giving up 352 YPG and 19 PPG respectively. In 2012 those numbers would have seen us finish sixth in the conference in both categories. The game has evolved.

I will believe Bama repeats until they don't. Despite the 8 players selected in the first 2 rounds of the NFL draft, the upcoming tam appears to be stacked with talent in every phase of the game. There is even some youth at key positions which could mean the next TWO seasons will spell misery for all those expecting the end of the Alabama Dynasty.

We can overcome an injury at any position, except QB. I don’t see how we repeat with Tyson at QB. Given Bryce size and no history on how he handles being sacked and such, I’m a little concerned.

We were so far and away the best team in CFB last year, even after losing All-Americans Dickerson and Waddle

That’s such a great point. We lost 2 NFL draft picks and still cruised to the championship. Add in the fact that the 2021 recruiting class we brought in might be the best in history.

And Dickerson would've been a 1st round pick without guys injury. Losing 2 first rounders would've killed most team's season.
