Washington Redskins defensive end Jonathan Allen knows what teammate Da'Ron Payne is going through.

A rookie nose tackle, Payne suffered a left ankle injury at training camp on Friday when he was stepped on during practice. Allen missed 11 games during his rookie season because of a Lisfranc injury.

Allen and Payne joined Washington as first-round draft picks from Alabama, with Allen coming aboard in 2017 and Payne in 2018. That's why Allen knows what Payne's thinking: They were "Bama-nized" by coach Nick Saban.

"I feel like it's going to be tough for him mentally just because he's still Bama-nized," Allen said, "and he still thinks he has to push through everything. But at the same time, I'm like, 'Payne, we've got to get you ready for the opening game, so just take it day-by-day, work your butt off and do what you've got to do to get back.'"

Allen said Payne's Alabama mindset meant he was "definitely going to try to rush it back, try to get out there as quickly as possible."

"I kid you not: I've seen guys tear an ACL and play a couple of plays afterwards on a torn ACL," Allen told the Washington Times. "I swear to goodness. Ask anybody. So just like little stuff like that. Coach Saban's favorite quote is 'Either you're down or you're up.' ... You don't get hurt at Bama. You play through it. You tough through it until the end of practice."

Damn.

No idea how to feel about that.

I know Mark Barron tried to play with a torn pec, and it caused him to miss a big time play in the "cam back" iron bowl.

I've always said the healthy backup HAS GOT TO BE better than the injured starter.

He's not better. He's hurt. But can't have him miss a day of practice! He's gotta improve if we're gonna beat this juggernaut Tennessee squad.

Moronic. Utterly moronic. Tua could sit in a wheelchair from now until the Saturday we play LSU, and we'd be nothing but better off for it. Saban's playing checkers, not chess.
You are a fool.

Saban hides the severity of injuries. Anyone that watched him play Saturday could see he wasn't ok and I don't know how Saban can say he's better today than last week after what happened Saturday night. Just my opinion. I have no sauces
Saban did not say he was 100%, he said he was OK. And since more time has passed it's normal for the human body to improve as time passes. That's how the human body typically works.

Since you don't have access to the current state of Tua's condition nor do you have the medical expertise of the staff who is far more invested than you, I'm confused as to the logic behind your criticism.

This doesn't mean that the staff knew the ACL was torn. It often happens when someone tears their ACL that they can walk off the field or play for a while. The trainers can usually tell by how the knee reacts to their manipulating the leg, then they know.

They don't play kids who are in danger of exacerbating their condition by playing, i.e., cleared by the medical staff, so if they can handle the pain they want them to carry on. If normal playing endangers their condition they wear a black jersey and are held out.

I think the Trevon Diggs situation displays it best. The player continued to play on a broken foot because he wanted to push through. The staff later realized the severity of the injury following the postgame medical reviews and he is out for the season.

Wouldn’t Tua’s parents have a say in this also? I would believe that if they thought the injury were serious enough for Tua to sit then he would sit. They were in the tent with him when it was decided that he could play if needed. It seems they are the type of parents who takes their son’s health seriously.

Yeah...and I'm pretty sure Mark Barron didn't know he had a torn pec until he realized he couldn't lift his arm to bat the ball down when Cam threw it to his man back in the 2010 Iron Bowl.

A lot of our players play through injuries because they don't realize the severity of it until a) something happens to them on the field or b) they go to the sideline and get seen by the trainers.

I know how the human body works. I also know that when you are dinged up and aggravated the injury again, it doesn't help. I'm not saying he shouldn't be playing. That's up to Tua. All I was complaining about is saying he's better than last week.

I also said that I understand why Saban down plays injuries. I get it and don't blame him one bit, but on the other hand he can't complain when people don't buy what he's telling.

bear bryant and the junction gang, would lol'ing their butts off at this thread.

yes, things have changed tremendously in football. but some things are still evident. playing thru pain is one of those. players want to play, it's ingrained in them. despite their best efforts, dr's miss things occasionally.

yes i do believe all bama players are treated the same. but, if there were one special player, that was going to receive everybody's absolute best? i'd have to think it would be tua.

Powhound asked what Allen said. I posted the article and quoted Allen. I didn't give any personal opinions because I don't know any of the details. I didn't criticize the coaches or say anything negative. I just posted the fricking article that Powhound wanted to see

I think this is a situation similar to when I was in the military/boot camp.

While we didn't have the major injuries you see in college football, as a rule you did not complain, you just tough it out and get through it.

And if you don't, someone is going to be on your arse pushing you to do so.

However, that doesn't mean you go out there and push with a broken leg or major injuries. There is a limit and the quote you have there seems to leave that open, and I doubt it's meant to be. When what you are doing is causing further injury - then it's time to stop.

And at that point, it changes from you getting in trouble for not pushing, to you getting in trouble for not speaking up. I'll give an example.

Those combat boot suck. My feet would get blisters on them. The heel of my foot got a blister, I pushed through it. Then I basically kept getting blisters on top of blisters to the point where I was missing many layers and it was starting to be like a hole.

I never spoke up, and it went unnoticed until we had a feet inspection. Drill Sgt saw my foot and had a fricking fit all over me. You'd have thought I did it to his foot.

As a result I ended up having to wear regular shoes for a couple of weeks with mole skin and all that jazz. Basically "sidelined" myself by not speaking up and pushing through. Feet healed, never had problems after.

So you take a case like Barrett and his foot. He keeps playing because he's not doing further injury, gets it fixed at the end of the season. Meanwhile you look at Riggs and his broken foot. Not an injury he was able to play through.

And I would bet a years salary those who are out there playing a "couple of plays" after an ACL tear are basically exactly like me and my blisters. It was more a matter of them making a poor choice than someone actually pushing them.

Add to that, the pressure of wanting to make a good impression to the NFL scouts, and help your draft status, a lot of guys are probably making business decisions to play through injuries now so they can get paid in April.

I am sad that I only have one upvote to give you.

When did we get so spoiled and arrogant that we think as Alabama fans that we know more about what's wrong with a player than coach does? I came in here expecting excitement basically got a bunch of barner bullshite. Saban always, I repeat always does what's best for the players. I think some of you enjoy being miserable want to go hop on the Gus bus nobody wants your asses here.

Im sure Tua's parents know the Heisman is in play and would like to see him out there unless there was some danger in playing him. The medical staff said he is cleared, so thats it. Also, if saban sits the starting QB because "we dont need him to beat TN" that is what Saban calls not respecting your opponent. And it sends that message to the team.

It’s sad really. We have the best fans, but we also have the worst.

I’m just gonna keep assuming these dumbasses are children.
