“You guys like 2015 Derrick Henry-led offense? Because that’s what you’re going to get with Tommy Rees,” he said. “It may not be with one back, but you’re going to get heavy personnel, and you’re going to get a downhill rushing attack, a la 2009, a la 2010, a la 2011 and 2012, 2010 not as much. Either way, that’s a downhill, flat-back rushing attack. … We were less-balanced in 2010 when the game was on the line than in any of the other 3 seasons, which is why we didn’t win it.”

McElroy then channeled some fans’ point of view about wanting the “good old days” with Jim McElwain as OC, and said, “That’s what you’re going to get.”

McElroy added that Rees would use tight ends from a “12 personnel” package to “hammer” opponents.

“I think it’s a very effective style of attack,” he said. “I love the hire, personally, it’s exactly what I want the Bama offense to be, and it’s what I believe in.”

Before everyone gets completely blinded by what this means for the offense I would suggest to think more about what this means for the defense.

Getting punched in the mouth every day at practice instead of playing 7 v 7 is EXACTLY how to reclaim our identity on defense. This team had gotten soft on both sides of the ball. There is only one way back to the glory days of making asses quit, and that's with a physical brand of football.

Kyren Williams is actually a pretty decent comparison to Jace although McClellan is more explosive

Williams stats under Rees

2020: 1125 rush yards, 5.3 ypa, 13 rush TDs, 313 yards receiving, 1 rec TD

2021: 1002 rush yards, 4.9 ypa, 14 rush tds, 359 yards receiving, 3 rec TDs

Basically for 2022 we averaged 7 more passes per game than Notre Dame did. They averaged 6 more runs per game than we did.

We have gotten too soft on defense and offense. Any team that has a decent power game right now is gonna have an advantage against team that don't want to play tough and disciplined. And with our talent, we would wear out opposing defenses....If I almost NEVER see shotgun at the goal-line again it will be too soon.

Certainly matches up with Saban wanting to get back to a more run balanced offense.

And how many of those passes were Bryce running around in circles trying to improvise a miracle, and how many of their runs set up an actual effective play action pass.

Then, how do those extra rush attempts at practice during the week get the OL firing off the line, and get the defense ready to bow up ?

I think once again Saban knew better than anyone what this team needed. Go figure. I for one am ready for a more physical brand of football on both sides of the LOS.

I like the hire. Now if only we could get Coach Shoe to come home.

Was Grubb this type of OC? If not, why was he Saban’s first choice if his goal was to become more physical?

Ok. So the new board rules are, no conjecture or comments on rumors or media reports, etc. got it. It’s gonna be pretty quiet around here, Dad.

I think Rees just used the personnel he had to their best ability.

Saban already has his system. Rees will come here and run that while making some adaptations.

He isn't coming in to change our entire way of playing.

I usually dismiss most of what McElroy says but I hope he is right about this because with all the RBs we have it would be a shame if we don't find a way to get them on the field as much as we can.

Yeah, we’re not going to look like 2009 or 2011 on offense. But I do think we put a little more focus back on a physical run game, but use it to complement the explosive passing games we’ve seen in recent years. 2020 is an example of how the two can work hand in hand.

This part is exciting. We criminally underuse our tight ends.
