And yes Venables has 2 sons at Clemson. It’s a good bet he will be more likely to accept a head coach job after their departure

He has been the DC at CU since 2012(9years)and prior to that he was the DC at OU for 13 years. His oldest son came to CU in 2018. He has had multiple opportunities for HC jobs but is happy being a DC.

Just two days ago his name came up for HC jobs and as always stated he is happy doing what he does. Again I hope Sark falls into that category.

He can be at the top of their list and it won't matter. Sark won't go to the Barn.

So he has been at Clemson while his sons were growing up. Sounds like a good Dad

He was demoted from defensive coordinator to co defensive coordinator at Oklahoma when Bob Stoops brought his brother to OU

I don’t care if he never takes a head coaching job but I think it’s more likely after his sons leave Clemson.

He was that prior to Mike Stoops leaving as well in 2004

Interesting note he did seek the HC job at CU when they hired Dabo. So maybe his plan to be coach in waiting.

Figured we could at least get through the conference championship game without major distractions but:

I was waiting to see how long it would take them to get around to it. Not very surprising. I could see us giving him a raise, but we won't double his salary. It's just a question of whether he wants what would likely be his last chance at a HC gig to be almost entirely reliant on his ability to beat Saban.

How weird would it be to see a Auburn soon-to-be head coach, actually coaching at Alabama (in the playoffs) but recruiting for Auburn?

I can't see Sark doing something like that to Saban.

Ha. Get to quote myself.

We may find out . . .

If he does interview and gets the job, it would be ok - it may take awhile for him to get the kind of talent he has to play with at Bama.

That could take years.

Think about it, he has had 3 NFL QBs (Hurts, Tua, & Mac), Multiple NFL RBs, about half a dozen NFL-ready 1st round WRs and OLs.

Ya ain’t gonna get that kinda talent any time soon on the Plains. They will need 3-4 years of heavy recruiting considering the mess they have this year.

Guy deserves another chance at some point though.

I'll be honest - that seems like a really bad situation for him. But, if he feels like he needs to strike while the iron is hot, I'd get it.

Yeah I mean there's never any time like the present, but I would also expect him to get other opportunities in the future. The big problem that whoever takes the Auburn job will face is that it's a bit of a rebuild, but he won't be afforded that kind of patience. Also, there's the fact that it's a toxic shite hole with a legion of megalomaniacal boosters who are constantly engaged in a bunch of Game of Thrones style palace intrigue nonsense.

The devil is in the details. I found this paragraph telling:

The expectation is that Auburn will interview Sarkisian on Sunday, per sources. The Broyles Award semifinalist has made it clear that he doesn’t want to have any communication about the job until after the SEC title game.

I may be reading it wrong, but that doesn't sound like he's even agreed to interview. It reads more like AU made contact and he (through his agent, of course) said he isn't talking about any job until after the SECCG.

That's a pretty professional position to take and one that doesn't suggest he's looking to run for the door.

Nobody should feel bad about ANY assistant listening to other offers. For them this is a business and most all are a couple of bad seasons from unemployed. Sark's no different. I doubt he takes a job that puts him in the SEC West against Saban every year unless it's just an outlandish offer but if Auburn comes in offering something outrageous like a Jimbo/aTm deal he'd be an absolute idiot not to take it - and I bet Saban would tell him that same thing.

This I think is the key. Because if he walks into that interview and they offer him crazy money + huge assistant pool, that changes the equation.

I want to see Sark do well. I do not believe that the next coach at Auburn can do significantly better than the guy they just fired in the context of the current SEC.

I don't think they're set up for short term success either and (assuming AU offers) I don't think he takes it for standard money and buyout arrangements. He's got more security where he is now. On the other hand, if they offer something ridiculous like Jimbo got you have to take it.

Let's say they offer Saban money. Something like 7 years/$50 mil guaranteed. You don't have to succeed. You just gained family financial security for generations. You don't turn that down.

I know it isn't always about the money, but sometimes it's about the money.

Why does nobody try and take from Dabo? I’d figure Venables and Tony Elliot would be getting calls all the time
Venables is Dabo's Mickey Andrews. He's paid a ton....has no HC headaches and responsibilities....just goes to work and comes home. Hell, if one can leave their ego at the door, it's probably the best of both worlds.

i'm just wondering if the barn would up the ante a bit more than normal, if they thought it would derail bamas natty chances?

If Auburn chooses a head coach as much to do with how it affects Alabama as to how it improves their own program then I won’t worry about them

I do think Fulmer chose Pruitt at least in part to do with how it impacted Alabama. Look at them now. No better than before and I don’t think as good as with Jones
