I’ll be the first to admit I had a lot of questions last year about Oats and the team. Turns out that it was about 98% on the “talent” from last year. I still think that Oats is still learning how to coach and we still have WTF moments, but nothing like last year. Once we started reducing turnovers, we have become a different team. If we could be more consistent hitting 3’s and stop losing focus (especially after we go on a run), there isn’t a team in the country that could stay close to us for 40 minutes. And it looks like Nate has learned to call TO to stop opponents momentum, which has driven me batshit at times. RTR and time for a new arena.

The problem is we don’t have any length on defense. Our Guards are all small and can’t guard anybody. Nimari Burnett and Josh Primo would have fixed all these problems. Oats counted on having both so he could “hide” JQ, JD, and Shack defensively and he got neither.

Offense is top 15 in the country scored over 80ppg and that’s with turning the ball over nonstop and Missing open shots nonstop.

Oats will learn and come back with a better group next year

They were here during football season, and though I rarely ever come to this board anymore because of it, I am sure they are still here. I see at least one has posted in this thread the last couple of days.

I love that we pulled this thread back up. This team isn't the same team and Oates isn't the same as last year.. he's playing defense now, getting more points, more talent, etc... All the positive things you need to be successful. I'll be the first to praise coaches and I have no problem asking the tough questions.

The problem here is that some people don't understand that asking tough questions doesn't mean that you want to can the coach. It's simply asking a question to make people think and answer. It was just an ask to get to the root cause. Some people don't seem to understand that.

Obviously, coach made some adjustments and got some more talent. It's all coming together.

I don’t think OP has commented in the basketball thread at all this season.

It might not be his best coaching job, but Calipari, Pearl, Izzo, Bennett, Coach K, and Roy Williams all have had worse seasons than this in the past 2 years alone. Sometimes even the greats miss the tourney and we aren't remotely close to doing that

I'll remain optimistic. But the questions about fundamentals, fixable mistakes, and effort and Oats' role in them are valid

I'll take it

You're not alone there, Holmes.

Correct. Only 2 returning starters, one of which is our #3 PG.

and Oates isn't the same as last year.

No. He's the same. Maybe a little wiser. But the offensive and defensive strategy is identical to the last 3 years.

he's playing defense now

And this is how you know someone only pays attention when things are going really good or really bad. In 20/21, when we went to the Sweet 16, we were the #3 AdjDefense on Ken Pom. It was our offense that was #30. Defense has always been Oats' specialty.

Regular season titles...

I stand by what I said ABOUT LAST YEAR'S TEAM.

I know you're so proud of yourself, but it's actually really sad that you let me live rent free in your head. I'm actually flattered.

I'm very proud of this team this year. I'll be even happier when we win in Nashville, which I think we can.

You think this is a low-major conference or something? Or are you going to blame a coach in his 4th year for not bringing home a natty yet in a sport where we have never sniffed one?

Actually don't have a problem with the OP. I didn't think Oats did a good job with last year's team. I thought we had enough talent to be better. Ultimately that is Oats' responsibility. Of course, as I said back then, I am very glad he is our coach and has raised the bar.
