What?

I really don't understand the knocks on Milroe's passing thus far. He has looked fine to me. I've never watched Milroe make a pass and thought "damn this dude cannot throw, and is very inaccurate."

To answer the title Q, no. We’d see more running wrinkles (BoB hates it for some reason) but I prefer the Tua, Mac style offense where we utilize the passing game where applicable. I’d rather not become run dependent in a shoot out era of football

This is where I think people are getting caught up with the question, amongst other preferences . No one is saying become QB run dependant I am saying how would you use Milroe's speed, if at all. I feel you would have to are you really are overlooking what /looks to me a game changing offensive resource.

And you can skew run with a QB threat and still be explosive in college. All of Lincoln Riley's OU offenses ran more than pass and had a QB run threat. I don't think anyone would say he has not run explosive offenses with elite passing attacks. Clemson's Lawrence led offenses were explosive relatively speaking and run first. They usually incorporated more QB run in the playoffs when things got tough but they attacked the boundaries with big receicers. Day can skew his offense to take advantage of QB run threat and still be explosive passing.

The goal is to hypothetically incorporate an elite QB run threat, not have it take over the offense, unless that is your scheme preference for Milroe.

With his athletic ability, you have to tweak the offense to take full advantage of it, in my opinion

I am just asking if ended up with starting QB job, what would be the best way to utilize him to maximize that threat? Or what would you do to maximize that threat or would you do nothing at all and have him run basically the BY or Mac setup?

I understand what you’re asking, but I don’t have a clue about a offensive package that fits his strength’s. Only seen him play in the A-day scrimmage and that really doesn’t show us what he’s capable of. And a few times this yr in mop up duty.

We know he’s a dynamic runner once he breaks the pocket and has a cannon for a arm, but these games are in hand when he comes in for reps. But honestly don’t know the first damn thing about him. We know he’s very dangerous runner, other than that I don’t have a clue.

I guess Milroe would flourish in a Gus Malzahn type offense. Anytime Gus had a athletic qb like Milroe in his offense, it was a problem to stop

That would be more QB run than I would prefer but as some one said earlier that Nick Marshall offense was bananas. I think Milroe could be a monster in an offense like that.

Cam Newton, Nick Marshall… when they dropped back to pass and the play broke down them two just created. Pain in the arse to stop

For 4 years I saw nothing to suggest Mac Jones was a championship quarterback. Then he learned on the job against Auburn and Michigan, had a full offseason as the guy and you now the rest. As far as the offense, I wouldn't change a thing. They'll coach Milroe up. And he'll be lights out.

Mac Jones had pretty elite pocket awareness and movement from the get go. You don’t just “coach” that up easily. The tape on him was absolutely nuts how well he positioned himself around pressure

I don’t think anyone we’ve had has ever had similar movement like that

The issue is the question comes off as “should we go back to something like the Jalen offense?”. You can’t incorporate his legs without becoming more dependent on calling running plays.

It’s like comparing the playcalling under Stroud at Ohio State to JT Barrett or Tua to Jalen. You have an entirely different playbook that tries to set up different angles within the play calling, like Kiffin/Sark calling screens to manipulate coverage play calls and open up deep throws.

You can’t really fit everything into a playbook. If you’re heavily dedicating stuff towards using a QB’s legs you’re going to have to trim part of the playbook elsewhere. It also alters the weak points of your offense when some of those specific plays break down or are schemed against. We used a ton of rollouts with Jalen and Blake Sims until teams started bracketing, then the passing became an issue because we had some dependence on mobility to make up for their weaker passing skills.

I wouldn't be surprised if we went for a transfer if an elite QB was available

I don't think that is how comes off. The question is what would you do if anything to take advantage of his speed. To me that doesn't mean going back to something like the Jalen offense but if that is how some want to take it that is fine. We have had people talk about doing that, or doing more of the Tua RPOs, complimentary personnell, not doing anything at all and totally different offensive schemes all together.

As far as becoming more run dependant based on this I don't believe that would be the case. To me it just means the runs that you call incorporated more Options for the QB to be involved. You call more inside zone in place of your straight handoffs and you incorporate passing more of your pass play off the RPO. You may also sprinkle in some straight QB runs that would have been straight running plays. Now this would add more runs but you can also incorporate more WR misdirection to get them, RBs and Milroe into running plays. I think it makes you more diverse and makes your RBs more dangerous.

I disagree with the playbook piece. I think the concepts that Day added in 2017 for Barrett exist for Stroud today but they get to their routes and sets in a different ways to take advantage of the strengths of the QB. The QB runs exist but you don't call them cause that isn't Strouds strength. I could see someone calling that a different play book but I just think it is variation on play calling.

I don't think Riley redid his offense for Jalen when he came over. He had QB runs in their and probably added a few run plays he was comfortable with but the O from Baker to Kyler to Jalen where basically the same with tweaks for each.

Other than the fact that staff would go for any elite players that would help the team why would you think that? I don't think anything has been indicated by staff they are dissatisfied with the QBs we have and who are arriving. I could see us getting an upperclassman or grad transfer to come in and compete but I don't think they would need to have the rep of say Caleb Williams.

i dont think you change anything. the only difference would be, he'd take off running sooner than BY9 does. i think this would be the same for simpson also.

I didn’t hear anybody praising Mac’s pocket awareness when he was throwing the ball to Auburn. Milroe has game breaking speed. You don’t coach that either. I’d argue his pocket awareness is pretty good too. He really seems to know when hang in and when to tuck it and run. He needs better command of the offense. Which coaching provides.

I’ve not read through the thread but nothing gets the Bama guys going like the backup QBs. 5 pages on this and the other threads die. Going to be a crazy off-season, we’ll need to go ahead and do teams again.

Yeah Id modify the offense alright...

Id have his arse playing WR, RB, returning kickoffs, returning punts, and QB in short yardage situations.

Never want another limited passer ever again however.

Yeah kid has a canon, but what he needs to show is accuracy and control of that Canon. That and a deep understanding of reading defense before snap and processing adoptions after the snap.

I agree. Many in this thread don’t seem to understand how stony his arm is. He does need to make improvements but that’s to be expected. His athleticism is better than any qb we’ve had at Bama.

He does seem extremely limited in the passing game, right now. He will get better, but I think Ty is going to be the guy. Really good arm, accurate, and more athletic than he gets credit for.
