The kid just can't handle the job at this point. Getting the OL lined up properly, reading the defenses, taking the "open" receiver instead of holding it and letting the play breakdown.
Do you think elite QBs just hatch from an egg ready to win Heismans?
The kid is a redshirt freshman making his second start on the road.
Was it a good first half? No.
Does it mean he "cant handle the job" or "lacks QB IQ"? No.
It means hes making his second start at age 19.
Go look at Joe Burrow. Or Jayden Daniels. Or pretty much any nationally elite QB at the end of their career and compare it to how they looked in their first road start in the SEC and you'll realize that QB's need time to develop.

I've said it before but we have a segment of our fans who honest to God think that if a new QB doesn't pass for 500 yards per game with 7 TDs and no INTs every game, their reaction is, "HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!".
Nothing wrong with high expectations but there has to be a smidge of realism here. The type of fans above help keep alive the perception that our fan base is insane.

Progression from 1st to 2nd half was pretty good.
Imagine a QB making his 2nd career start in a conference road game in an environment in which the opposing head coach made it their superbowl and still winning by 28.
Gimme another QB in that situation that did better?

Everyone wanted Russell...but they wanted Ty Simpson that is 6'4, runs like deer, plays like 4th year player, not a talented young guy that will make his mistakes along path of developing

Admittedly, I called for Mack to be put in at one point because I assumed he would have more knowledge about the playcalling, since he’s been around forever.
But comparing these guys is unfair.
Tua had guys like Jeudy, Smith, and Ruggs.
Bryce had Williams, Metchie, and Bolden.
KR technically has RCW, but he tends to drop passes and his routes aren’t exactly jaw dropping. Plus it looked like UK was taking a page from ECU defensively.

Yeah, being 1 pt. down isn't a time to panic. We all expected that he (QB) would struggle his first road game.

Yeah it was bound to happen. I think the talent is there but he’s got lots to learn

That's the problem, people think Russell will step right in like Tua and Bryce and start slingling it for TDs. Those guys are #1 and 1st round draft picks which Russell may grow into. He's got awhile to go but those two had growing pains too.Tua at least had a good oline, Bryce ran for his life a lot.
Grubb did not help his young, first SEC road start qb with the playcalling in the first quarter though. He should be protecting his qb, not calling plays like he is a three year starter.

Agreed on the play calling. Especially after the defense came out and got a stop. Just ease him into the game with some handoffs. Everyone knew the crowd would be fired up. Grubb did him no favors with the play calls. Let him get used to the speed and the sound and the size of the defense.
But at the end of the day for RG and KR, lets hope at least one of them learned something.

QB I.Q. and an individual's !.Q. are two very different things, and questioning describes a sense of unsurety, not statement of fact! The problem of player alignment on so many plays, and so much pre-snap backfield movement (called by the QB) projects uncertainty and confusion. Also, route reads tend to be an individual quality. Obviously experience should improve his, but for someone who's been on the team practicing with them for 1 1/2 years, he certainly didn't show it.
I laugh at both the "total optimists" and the "woe is me" howlers on the board, but my assessment at halftime was simply an opinion from what I'd seen so far.

I said this in another thread. Grubb seems like he is going to do what he’s going to do whether Tom Brady is his quarterback or a sophomore from Smiths Station High School is his quarterback, and by God it’s up to the quarterback to handle it. That’s a tall ask for a rookie quarterback right now regardless of his raw tools.

At this point, 12 has already made up his mind where he is going to throw the ball when he breaks the huddle.
If that receiver is open, then we have success. If not, we have a potential problem.
Just needs more and more snaps in live fire. Two more games and I believe we will see what we have in 12.

And as DeBoer said after the game, he needs to understand that on a RUN and PASS option … both words are in the description … it’s also OK to hand the ball off. We actually appear to be able to do something when that happens this year.
