Did anyone see the AL.com story with Grubb talking about the QBs?

First off, let's save the brickbats about "Saban didn't let assistants talk to the media." I absolutely respected, never questioned one bit, his right to do that, but it's a different regime and the "one voice" thing is the exception rather than the rule with programs. (I can tell you from covering this stuff for a couple of decades, you got WAY better and more useful stuff from assistants than head coaches.)

As far as the story, it's generalities but I found it interesting. Thoughts?

Grubb on the QBs

What I picked up.

1. Ready to play now... Simpson... He's the layup shot on a short par 4 where you think you might be able to reach the green if you swell up on your drive. The sensible choice.

2. Mack... Mack reminds him of Penix a lot. Good thing probably. He's the project with good upside.

3. Russell... I think he's in love with Russell. He does view him as making mistakes but recovering well. Has the most upside but may be too early to give the reins to him just yet.

God please don’t tell me we have a 2017 Tua situation

I’ll take that. We won a National Championship with that recipe.

You play whoever gives us the best chance to win a championship this year out of fall camp.

If we drop 2-3 games you hand it over to Russell.

If the margin between QB1 and Russell is thin you go with Russell.

This is all just taken from the short video of his interview after practice.

Listening to him, it sounded exactly like most people assume -

Ty starts.
Mack has ability but is behind Ty.
Russell is a very talented freshman who probably won't play much this year.

I told yall from the jump I wouldn’t be shocked if Russell started.

This ain’t Saban’s staff. Grubb and DeBoer have started freshman before

Ty will get it by default. I think he can do fine, I just don't think his top end is as high as Russell. Ty has been here 3 years and has yet to throw a TD even in garbage time. I also imagine his low is not as low as a guy like Milroe. We probably have the same record with him as we did with Milroe last year, maybe even better. Russell, though, seems like a future Heisman contender and 1st rounder. But you don't need to ruin him by starting him too early.

You do realize that in garbage time, Nick frowned upon scoring late, especially throwing the ball, right? It was usually toss sweep left, draw, dink and dunk pass for 5 yards to the TE, toss sweep right. Very rarely any passes more than 10 yards.

So, it's not all that surprising. Some of you guys act like Simpson was some former 2 star recruit from a 1A high school in rural south Alabama and is a walk on.

Fact is, no one on here really has any idea what he can do. Will he light it up? Who knows. Maybe he will. Maybe he won't but I'll defer to Grubb and DeBoer's judgement.

Sounds like the QB for 92, 09, 11, 12, 15, and 20 NCs

The seasons with uber talented BY and Tua starting...0 NCs

The baseline is that we have to have a competent QB to succeed in this offense or we're fricked.

I think Simpson can meet that baseline even if the others have more potential upsides.

AJ and Mac were Heisman finalists and Johnny Unitas award winners. Mac was a 1st round pick. We've won with very talented QBs. And Bryce and Tua never won as starters because of injuries, Tua's hip and Bryce's receivers, plain and simple.

First of all Mac was very much elite in 2020 and a massive part of Bama’s offense. AJ was good in 2012.

But all those teams except for 2020 (which relied on Mac and the offense) had very very good defenses. It’s not like Bama was winning those games mostly because they had a “game manager” passing game instead of an elite pass heavy one. They won more so because the defenses were suffocating types that didn’t usually gave up much points and were pretty disciplined.

I hope we have that kind of top 3 defense this year but I’m not going to count on it

I'd be real surprised if Mack didn't start.

Mac was a seasoned senior with a couple of high pressure starts(due to injury) under his belt before he ever got his own season as the feature starter.

AJ was a stone cold winner with good but not elite physical skills...playing on stacked teams. He was at Bama 2 full seasons before he first got his start.

The problem is that some of yall are so star struck that you are clamoring for a kid to start with ZERO experience because he was an elite recruit...but then expect upperclassmen type results.

I think its been shown that otherworldly skill alone at the QB position(Bryce Young) cannot will a team to a NC and may actually hinder it because the coaches tend to put games on his shoulders rather than develop a balanced offense.

If Keelon wins it means we will not compete for a national title, but will be really good in 2026-27, but his backup those years likely isn't on the roster now.
