I think Scott Payton is right. Gattis had some support but not as much support as he thought to become the head coach at Michigan if Harbaugh were to leave.

Anyone got any idea about Auburn's most recent press release? It seems they may be backing off, but I could be reading the wrong stuff between the lines.

I think Harsin will survive another season but with NIL becoming such a force I think the big Auburn boosters will make sure they have little in the way of NIL deals to offer so recruiting will suffer even more so.

Auburn has really screwed themselves. Harsin already has had a rough offseason (recruiting was mediocre, tons of transfers) and now the administration/power brokers have used these leaks to cut his legs out from under him.

Does anyone realistically see anything better than 6-6 this coming season? Couple that with perceived instability and their recruiting is going to tank. I mean this sounds crazy, but with how far this has gone they may actually be better off just going ahead and removing him. Unless you're going to commit to giving him four years regardless, which the money men down there surely won't go for.

Auburn is in a really weird spot. Harsin was never really the answer in the first place and I think that was pretty obvious when the hire was announced. But this whole stunt, trying to basically destroy his credibility and fire him with cause or lower buyout, would have to scare off any reasonable person from taking that job now. Regardless of opinions on Harsin, you don't give the guy just one year at 6-7 and choking away a few games that should've been wins.

Because of this going public, they're in a lose-lose situation. You may as well go ahead and rip the bandaid now but who do you replace him with? It'll be a worse candidate than Harsin originally and with even lower expectations.

If they make a coaching change in February and end up with someone like Steele or simply promote the boosters' favorite position coach, there's a very strong possibility they have 4 coaches in 4 years.

Locks is hiring former Alabama player and assistant Wes Neighbors(Secondary) and the recruiting mercenary himself, Lance Thompson(OLBs) at Maryland.

You got a be a hell of of salesman to keep getting jobs with Lance's baggage.

You should never underestimate the Barn (either way).

If Freeze will take their job, then he will be hired. A little bad PR about Freeze to go along with bad PR about Harsin means nothing to those folks.

See Pearl.

Freeze went 26–11 at Liberty. He went 8-5, 10-1,8-5 at Liberty.

His offensive scheme was hard to stop when he was at Ole miss, but teams have adapted to it by now. If he came to Auburn, I don't think he'll have successful career at Auburn like he did at Ole miss... More brutal schedule. and it would be hard to assemble a staff together in Late Feb/March. He's not going to do that.

He lucrative deal he has at Liberty... I dont' think Auburn can afford that... with all the buyouts they have.

IMO, Hugh would be better off staying at Liberty.

This. They always bounce back after bullshite. See Dye after Barfield. Undefeated season after Dye is fired. Undefeated season after Jetgate. National championship after Tony Franklin 2008 disaster.

ETA: I'm afraid that they could actually make a good hire if they put the money in the right place. To think that good coaches won't take that job is just silly. Good coaches want the hardest challenge they can find.

I think that's true to an extent, but I'd add a caveat: Good coaches want the hardest challenge with factors they can control. Wealthy boosters usually aren't controllable.

Texas is probably the poster child for meddling boosters, but Auburn is also prominently featured on that poster. Not a lot of head coaches with any sort of established identity want to take those jobs, because they know they won't be fully in control. It's why Sark, who is a brilliant OC but hasn't yet proven anything as a head coach, went to Texas. That SHOULD be a premier job, but it's lost a lot of luster due to the well-established culture of booster-meddling.

Auburn is in the same boat, but they're actually in a worse position -- they don't have the same level of national cachet as Texas, and their booster issues may actually be at a worse level.

I get the Harsin dissatisfaction, but they screwed themselves and dug a deeper hole with this ugly airing of their dirty laundry.
