The highlights of Buchner tells me that Rees likes to design plays for a mobile qb to be able to run the ball. The Aday game Milroe and Simpson also had these same type of play’s designed in for their running abilities.

Not one time did I noticed Holestein or Lonergan have a designed play for them to run the ball. I don’t know much about these two qb’s but I don’t think they are mobile type qb’s.

My thinking is Saban and Rees want a 3rd qb option that has this type of running ability in case of injuries. Buchner knows the offense and has game experience

Will Buchner beat out 4 or 15? I doubt it, but he’s a good option to have to run this offense if it gets down to a 3rd string qb.

I don’t really feel great about any of the QBs right now. All three of the contenders looked majorly flawed in spring games. I guess our hope is that at least one of the three will make major strides this summer and fall camp. If not, I think we could be looking at an another disappointing season where we miss both the SECCG and Playoffs.

Saban did not bring in Buchner to be 3rd string.

Lonergan is athletic enough. Holestein is a pocket passer. Sort of reminds me of Jake Coker.

So you think Buchner is going to win that job in the fall? Really?

If he does that is a damning indictment of the other QBs, but history shows that's what Saban does. He brings in transfers to start.

So he’s going to win the job, that’s what you’re saying?

I think he will, but I'm pulling for Milroe.

Does Saban think Butcher is going to win the job? Is that what Saban is saying?

Answer: No! Saban brought the guy in because he thinks he can compete for and win the starting job! End of story. There is no prediction or guarantee.

We don't know who is going to win, but we know that Saban didn't waste a scholarship on a guy whom he knows for sure is going to be a third string back up player. We can surmise from the evidence that we have seen that one player or another will win the job, but the only thing we know is that Butcher was brought in to compete for the starting job.

You’d think Buchner was Freddy Krueger from the way some of this board is losing their minds over him transferring in

Half of the people whining about him starting are also contradicting themselves. If he’s the garbage everyone’s proclaiming him as, it makes no sense to say he’s got the starting role locked in. And if he’s got the starting role locked in, then the Milroe/Simpson group must be even worse than Buchner, and no one believes that.

Step off the ledge and stop panicking, Jesus.

I’m not sure how this is any different than when we tried to pull Minshew in 2018 while Jalen/Tua were competing for the job. If one of them transfers we have someone other than two naive freshman at second string. If he develops in the future, pans out, and wins a starting role in 2025 or something because he’s good then even better

You think it’s bad now, wait until we lose 3 games.

Well someone is going to be a 3rd option. Right now I’d say the pecking order is Milroe, Simpson and Buchner, but that’s just a guess. Unless one of the TF comes rolling in like a fright train in fall camp.

Of course Buchner will be given the opportunity to win that job. But I’m sure he knows where he stands if he doesn’t. He could be the #2 guy behind 4 or 15. Right now I would think 3rd

Minshew has talked about this a bunch. He was only coming to Bama to jump-start his coaching career and the plan was for him to be a grad assistant on Saban's staff after the season.

Buchner has 3 years of eligibility remaining, so he's not coming here for a coaching opportunity.

Scouting report for Dylan Lonergan....

quote:

A big-armed passer that isn’t afraid to stand his ground in the pocket and take a hit. Cleaner footwork allows him to establish a firm base and generate plenty of velocity. Shouldn’t be viewed as a run-first quarterback, but can improvise when plays break down and is rather accurate when on the move as he zips the ball into tight windows.

Has worked primarily out of a single-back spread attack throughout prep career while playing in the Peach State’s second-highest classification. Put up big numbers as a junior, completing just over 63 percent of his passes for 3,392 yards with 32 touchdowns to go against just three interceptions. Added 645 yards and seven more scores on the ground as he used his 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame to power through tacklers
