I think connecting him to Rees is the easy thing to do, but I think he just realized that he isn't going to start post-spring and is playing for a new coordinator than recruited him and decided to go elsewhere.
I'm sure he'd be willing to listen if Rees called him, but I don't think this was some predetermined match making situation.

This. People are jumping to conclusions again. Shocking. Not really.

It doesn’t help that national writers are immediately pushing this idea as if there’s validity to it.

The Athletic's write up noted that he just has very little actually QB playing experience even dating back to high school (also didn't mention us except to note he'd just enter a room where'd he'd be at best one of the 5 guys without experience).
quote:
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal, he announced via Twitter on Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Buchner beat out Drew Pyne for the team’s starting job in 2022 before suffering a shoulder injury in the second game that knocked him out for the rest of the regular season.
- Buchner returned for the team’s Gator Bowl victory, tossing three touchdowns and 273 yards.
- A four-star recruit in 2021, Buchner said in his post that “remaining at Notre Dame is thankfully an option I’m continuing to consider.”
- Notre Dame is expected to start former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman at the position in 2023. Hartman, who is expected to compete for the Heisman Trophy, transferred to South Bend after throwing for 12,967 yards and 110 touchdowns in five seasons.
What’s driving Buchner’s decision?
Playing time, because Buchner doesn’t have enough of it during his career, dating back to high school in California. In his past five seasons, Buchner has played a full campaign just once, his junior year at The Bishop’s School outside San Diego. He missed his high school sophomore year after tearing an ACL at the beginning of the year. He missed his high school senior year because COVID canceled high school sports across California.
His time at Notre Dame has been similarly volatile in terms of availability. As a freshman, he missed time with a hamstring injury but worked his way into games backing up Jack Coan as a package quarterback, operating out of what amounted to a run-first offense. As a sophomore, Buchner beat out Pyne for the starting job, but suffered a severely separated shoulder against Marshall, returning for the Gator Bowl.
His disjointed playing time has led to similarly scattered statistics, as Buchner has thrown more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (6). He’s also scored more rushing touchdowns (7) than he’s passed for the past two seasons.
quote:
College programs have completed spring practice with some semblance of a quarterback depth chart, at least at the Power 5 level. At a school like Alabama, which employs Buchner’s primary recruiter as its offensive coordinator, the starting job is open but Tommy Rees has multiple candidates to potentially fill it. Buchner would just be another one, even if he understands the offense at a high level.
This could create an odd dynamic for Buchner depending on how much certainty he needs around playing time. Does he drop down to a lowly Power 5 program that’s desperate for help? Because jumping into another quarterback competition may not be that much better for his outlook than sticking at Notre Dame.

Pete Thamel specifically mentioned Alabama in the headline of the article he put out.

Yep - sorry, that looked like I was disagreeing with you. I 100% agree with you re: the national media in general.

Doesn't mean he's good or anything, but he was better than Pyne (which is a very low bar).
Pyne: 65% completion, 8 YPA, 22 tds, 6 ints
I think the fact that Buchner got the start in the bowl game over a pretty serviceable guy is telling. I like the guys we have but it would be decent use of a roster spot imho

I would be fine with adding Buchner. If this happens it's because Saban wants it. Y'all always say to trust Saban. So, this situation is no different.

I don't think signing Buchner is signing a starter though.
This is more like signing additional competition for Fall camp...

I’m being told he is coming to visit Tuscaloosa like right now.

I don’t think we have enough room for him.

Over getting a quarterback we considered a few years back and knows the new OC’s approach? The worst that could happen is he is useful in the QB room.

Yup, Hank South is saying the same.

My sources are telling me we have started to pursue this guy. Massive NIL deal. Graduate transfer using a COVID year.

Who knows. His 2021 videos are pretty rough but that was his freshman year. But he does look to be a pretty tough player, not afraid to run and take a hit, and he did have some decent throws.
His 2022 film against Ohio st was much better. Not great, just better.
However, one thing is painfully clear. Notre Dame has some crappy skill players.
I am not a fan of frickin up your QB room unless you're getting a marquee player.

Nobody to blame but the staff for not having these kids prepared. Milroe has been here for three years. He should be ready.
