Austin Mack looked like a completely different QB in the pocket than Ty.

Didn't sense a lick of fear from him. He was poised, moved around nicely, and has an absolute cannon.
I think Ty hit his peak mid season. Mack looked like a better QB imo.
With that being said, I think the offensive players on the roster before DeBoer just dont fit this system.
DeBoer needs a QB who can push the ball down the field. Its the only way to run the ball in this system. Have to get the linebackers back into deeper coverages. Ty simply couldn't do that.

He looked confused, multiple times. His first redzone appearance was him bouncing around reads instead of taking his time.
He’s got more zip on the ball but by no means did I get the sense he was better mentally.
If we want to push the ball, we need to actually call plays to push the ball. Not call screens and 0 yard runs nonstop like we did for over half of our plays

He had a few nice throws but on the balance he was playing in garbage time and didn't really amaze. If he'd came in and put 17 on the board to salvage some respectability and maybe winnow down IU's scoring at the same time...31-17ish loss...but no, he had a few good throws mostly on the first drive then it was more of the same.

I don’t think the wind-up is as bad, but yeah it was similar. Was really surprised we didn’t just air it out on streaks when he came in.

Well yeah he didn't get prepped as the starting QB and we all know KDB had no intention of playing anyone besides Ty so neither backup really would get reps.

We called a combination but of course Ty refused to make those throws but Austin Mack didn't

Lol I knew this was inevitable when Mack hit that one nice pass to Williams down the sidelines. He then followed it up with a missile that was so off target that Hill had to go to the ground to get it five yards behind the line of scrimmage. This is what Mack has shown all season, stretching back to A-Day: impressive arm talent and shaky accuracy. There's potential there but nothing we saw yesterday was new for him.
I am hoping at this point that Simpson moves on for his own sake. In late September and October he showed his potential, but then defenses realized they could completely stop the run with just their down linemen and have two safeties high the entire game. I'd be interested to see what Simpson can do with an even moderately competent running game.

And the crazy thing is, Mack was specifically recruited by DeBoer and Grubb at Washington.

That is not what defenses did. They brought their safeties up on the first two downs and left their CBs in man situations knowing our QB wouldn't throw the fade or seam routes on those early downs.

It's not about knowing the play calls it's about being prepared to read the defense and he obviously wasn't because they didn't prep him to do so.

Yet Austin Mack came in without preparations or practice snaps and played better than Ty. This isn't debatable.

His first meaningful experience came in the Rose Bowl Semi Finals with the season in doubt.
He said himself that he was nervous.
Maybe if we designed some packages for him throughout the year when the offense was sucking arse, he would’ve been more experienced and less nervous.

Against an elite defense down 24-0 with zero run game and behind a bad OL. And it’s not like he played at much at all this year because we have so many close games

He needs an OL who won't collectively get sodomized at the LOS. That's the first step at running the ball effectively in ANY system.
