I’ve received many messages from the media regarding Antonio. It’s too bad that most of the media only reach out when there’s potentially bad or negative news.
I’m confident my following response will answer all of your questions:

Antonio’s grandmother recently fell very ill and is still fighting on life support. He is very close with her. Since this illness took effect, Antonio has taken it very hard. He has not attended classes and practices.

The University of Alabama has been extremely supportive and I couldn’t ask for better support from them.
Yesterday, Antonio asked to be placed in the transfer portal to see what his options are.

Although he’s in the transfer portal, he still can decide to remain at the University of Alabama.
My opinion is that Antonio should stay at the University of Alabama. However he’s an adult and it’s his decision.
Antonio knows that his family has & will always be there for him.
So, it is a family member/dying situation. And that kind of explains why Saban, to me at least, seemed pretty soft about it during the presser.
He has to discipline him for erratic behavior and not letting them know what's up, but sounds like he feels for him.
Hope it works out.

SoG beat me to it.
Don't know if these are real, but a twitter account claiming to be Antonio's parents are saying his grandmother has gotten ill and Antonio is taking it hard, not attending classes or practices... LINK

If that's not his parents, they've been playing a long con.

If the family thing really isn't an issue (as in death, sickness, etc), then this is just pathetic.
So when it does pan out to be exactly that... are we gonna label the fan reaction as just pathetic

If he transfers, my guess is he ends up at Penn State or Rutgers.

If it does pan out to be just that.....it isn't pathetic. It's understandable.
Which is the exact reason for the qualifier in the original statement.

I wish the kid the best but to leave Alabama would not be a wise decision. His father knows this as well. Losing a grandparent is tough but it's not like the kid can stop the grandparent from passing away whether he was near or far away.

Probably home sick as much as anything. Some kids can’t handle being away from home.

perhaps the (big) kid, and his support group, too, hav had some...err... extenuating circumstances from other programs
With these transfer rules, recruiting never stops.

I don't intend to flame you, but if what you are saying is true, why hasn't this sort of thing been commonplace for most of the 10+ years that Saban has been here?
Times are different. You have to adjust or you get left behind.
There haven't always been a transfer portal, social media craze, etc.
Kids nowadays are different then even those from five years ago. They want to be coddled or they start looking at their options..

The 2020 season takes abother hit, will be Saban's 1st rebuilding year.
These young 5 star guys that keep transferring, would have been a huge help next year to help offset the potential loss of 10 underclassmen that will probably jump to the NFL.

I experienced the loss of one of my grandmothers during my junior year there at UA, way back in '92. I didn't know how to cope and turned to alcohol. It took me a good 6-8 months before I came out of that funk. I was drinking 6 days a week!
I don't wish any harm to anyone, but I hope that this is true about his grandmother and not some ploy to simply dodge criticism that would come his way if it was about playing time only.

Saban and UA were very supportive of Alfano taking a few days to travel back home, but it's turned into extended "disappearance(s)" -- not attending classes and practices, not making up classwork, inadequate communication on his part, etc. It's hard to tell the extent competiton and his apparent level on the depth chart may be causing him to consider transering. Whether or not he chooses to transfer may be the best indicator of that.
By all accounts I've seen from people with inside connections, Saban and UA are doing what they can to be supportive of Alfano's grandmother's situation and to help him remain in school and on the team. I'm confident Saban thinks that's in his best interest. And unless his parents aren't being honest on twitter, they agree. Regardless of how it plays out, Antonio has my prayers and best wishes.
Imo, one good way to adjust to today's mindset is to not sign players with significant ingrained character issues -- they should be left behind. Why risk wasted signing spots, time, resources, etc. when they're pretty unlikely to mesh very well with Bama's program culture? For example, 2020 5* RB Zach Evans has elite talent but has also shown he isn't worth the trouble he'll bring to the party -- he's a lot like VanDarius Cowan. 2019 5* WR George Pickens and 2020 5* OLB Sav'ell Smalls are other guys Bama hasn't pushed for due to character concerns. So maybe Saban already adjusted in that regard.
I'm not saying that I think Bama shouldn't have signed Alfano. There was talk of him having character issues, but I never saw any details about the nature of those. My point is just that since today's environment encourrages more transfers, it thereby increases the need to avoid taking high-risk players -- to help keep the amount of transfers from getting too high.
Again, Antonio has my prayers and best wishes.

What was the toughest competition Alfano faced in high school?
Posted on 9/13/19 at 12:52 pm to stomp
Don't know, but the guy still flashed at the All-Star event playing against top players, so I don't think it's really a talent issue that's going on.
