Goddamn, is that two 5 star, highly touted Dlinemen that have transferred in the last 2 months?

Well I guess we could have seen this coming from a mile away.

If the family thing really isn't an issue (as in death, sickness, etc), then this is just pathetic. I hate blasting kids, try to never do it, but quitting after 2 months is a joke - not to mention the whole coming and going thing that has been going on.
I'm starting to lean more and more towards the fact that there are certain areas of the country we should recruit and others where, outside of a very, very, very strong feeling on a kid and his demeanor, we should avoid.

I cut the freshmen some slack. Starting college for me was pretty overwhelming and I didn't have the demands a football player does. And I don't know Alfano's family story, but a lot of these guys are the first ones in their family to go to college, so they may not have someone close to them they can lean on that has been through that experience.

I don't think it's a geographic thing. Minkah and Averett were also from New Jersey. Jonathan Allen, Cyrus Jones, and the Kouandjios were from the DMV. Like I said in another post on this subject, these elite recruits spend 2, maybe even 3, years having everyone around them tell them their shite doesn't stink and they are God's gift to football. Then they get to their first college practice and realize that their shite smells just as bad as everyone else's and God was kind enough to bless just this one football team with 84 other gifts. Some guys get over that shock quickly and others aren't able to. Sounds like Alfano is in the latter category.

I mean we don't get a lot of NJ kids but of the last 3 that I can think of Minkah and AA turned out pretty good.

This is why Dabo’s “we’re just a big, ole happy family” approach has its advantages over Saban’s “all business” approach. I’m not saying it’s better, but each one speaks to a specific group of kids and Dabo’s is easier to recruit to. All business, all the time gets old, even for mature adults. Flame away, I know it’s coming.

I don't intend to flame you, but if what you are saying is true, why hasn't this sort of thing been commonplace for most of the 10+ years that Saban has been here?

Solid counter-points re: regional recruiting.
Possibly just some bad luck, randomness.

I cut them slack for struggling - but handling it the way he did and then quitting and rolling out 3 games into the season is a failure.
It's totally understandable to have a lot of emotion in that first fall - new place, new people, hard, not being "the guy" for the first time. But your support group can't let you just succumb and quit before you have a chance to work through it (outside of some sort of extenuating circumstances).
It's just a bad move.

Really? Because aside from one year, we have had the best recruiting class for the past several years*. Where have Clemson's classes ranked (aside from this year, which is just ridiculous)?
*I only went by the 247Sports rankings.

"The Family" lost 5* Tavien Feaster to SC. CB, Kyler McMichael hit the transfer portal too. LB Shaq Smith also decided to get a quicky divorce through the ole transfer portal.
"The Family" lost 2-5 stars last season with QB Hunter Johnson and Kelly Bryant.

Apparently BOL mods are saying it's not true: LINK /

I don't think Dabo's approach is better than Saban's. Both can have have successes and failures with kids. I guess what I don't understand is that nobody blows smoke up these kids skirts about Alabama. You come to Alabama to work hard, that includes actually going to class unlike many other places where you can just do BS online classes and essentially be a semi-professional football player. During the recruiting process every slacker school imaginable rolled out the red carpet for a kid like Alfano, If he didn't want to go to class or work hard why didn't he just take one of those offers?

Every recruiting site kept AA ranked low because of his character issues. (Until the very end of the cycle) The common theme from literally every source was "all the potential in the world, but can he behave/conform/mature enough to succeed in college.
Sometimes you roll the dice and win; sometimes you roll the dice and lose.
Last years amazing DL pull makes this a non-issue IMO. Best of luck to the young man, and hopefully one day he gets it all figured out without having to pay too steep a price like some youngsters inevitably do.

What a shame. So much potential, heading down the drain.
