I don't think people really appreciate that there was a pretty long stretch there where the SEC West was led by Mark Gottfried, Anthony Grant, Stansfield, Rick Ray, Rod Barnes, Andy Kennedy, John Brady, Trent Johnson, Jeff Lebo, Tony Barbee, Stan Heath, and John Pelphrey. Just...yikes. Especially that window where you had late stage Gottfried and Brady along with Lebo, Heath/Pelphrey, Stansfield, and Kennedy. Whoa boy it was fricking pitiful.

Coaches still high on Bama

SEC Champion Up Two Spots in Latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll

A sour start to the week in Fayetteville was quickly erased as the Tide defeated Mississippi State on Saturday to earn their first SEC Regular Season title since 2002.

Alabama heads into the final regular-season week of the season tied for the No. 5 spot in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports.

May-an. Pre-Auburn game conference, Oats talked about us taking 25 rim shots while Arky took 21 yet they shot 48 free throws. Then called the game at Arky a debacle. Did not necessarily complain about reffing. But, you gotta figure he feels a little raw.

There's really not much else to say about it at this point. I do think it's pretty illustrative of why the halves system needs to be scrapped. Team fouls eventually have a cumulative effect. If you get screwed on a few bad calls early in the half it could mean an extra 3-4 minutes in the bonus/double bonus for your opponent and a bunch of extra FTs on floor fouls.

That can also work in the opposite if you were to reset fouls with each quarter. Imagine being in a tight battle, losing possession through a shot or turnover, and being 3 fouls away from the 1 and 1. If you're inside of 20 seconds you are royally screwed.

There are certainly pros and cons to quarters vs. halves, and I wish they would use it more extensively in the NIT to test some of these things.

When was the last time the SEC was this bad?

Having 2 ranked teams doesn't mean you're bad. It may mean you've got parity.

The fact that every single bracket projection has 6 of the 13 eligible teams in the NCAA tourney and none are named Kentucky strongly suggests the people that matter don't think the league is bad at all.

Don't forget, the Big-12 has seven teams ranked yet they lost the SEC/Big 12 challenge.

I don't see that as much of a down side. In this scenario if the game is tied you're just playing defense and trying to force overtime. If you are losing and you turn the ball over or miss a go ahead/game tying shot with under 20 seconds to go you don't deserve to win the game.

That was back when we had to convince ourselves that barely eeking out a W over a mid-major with one good player and a bunch of scrubs was somehow proof of things coming together. I don't miss it.

As a coach, I would like to see the number of fouls required to get into the bonus and double bonus change. Particularly, in high school, I think 7 and 10 are too low.

I like the quarter system in high school basketball but one of my biggest gripes is the lack of a shot clock. I would really like to see it added.

Hey, Oats likes a big that can shoot from three and Donta Hall was a career 100% three point shooter while at Alabama. You can't get better than 100%.
