Look I hate to be real about the guy. Im not an expert but I maybe missed 3-5 of their games this year. And my assessment of Torres is correct. Now is it possible he was their best option. Yes. But that makes me sad and hope the portal brings a 3B

His backup was a freshman — hit .200 and committed 2 errors in 9 appearances… sported a .333 fielding%

Also if you ever got to games early enough to watch warmups, there was a noticeable difference between the two.

But yea Torres only played because Vaughn loved him.

Not trashing Barnett. He was young and has potential. Highly rated out of HS.

Your assessment that he only played because Vaughn loved him? No, that’s not correct.

Did he play great? No. And I’m not suggesting he did. My only claim is that he was the best we had THIS year and he gave his best effort.

Not exactly what you’d hope for but if he is solid defensively (I have no idea) and he can be a bottom of the order guy it’s a little more palatable.

I do know our catching situation as of today doesn’t look great for next year so there may be a little bit of desperation.

Isn’t Luke Vaughn a catcher also?

I will admit I only attended one game where I got there during infield practice.

It’s just hard for me to believe you couldn’t have played someone else over there

Yes but he’s had shoulder issues for two years running now so his future back there is definitely questionable.

PORTAL NEWS: Alabama landed a commitment from Mizzou transfer catcher Mateo Serna late Friday night.

Serna spent three seasons in Columbia. He made 117 starts (44 in ‘26) behind the plate for the Tigers.

The Florida native amassed a .239 career batting average with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs.

He is the fourth transfer pickup of the offseason for the Crimson Tide joining Garrett Lambert (Mercer), Michael Senay (USF), and Cooper Neville (Dallas Baptist).

Serna fills a need and brings three years of SEC experience. I’ll take it.

On a side note, I’m here in Nashville for the Texas Tailgaters vs Party Animals bananas league game and TJ Reeves now plays for the Part Animals. Thought that was interesting

So, are you now saying Vaughn put the best player he had available at the position? Because as a coach, that's all you can do. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t. The coach and the player did the best they could and that's all you can ask. Hopefully the freshman will get better and we'll get better players in the program. But you can't get mad at the coach when he puts the best player he has at that position there, even though the player may not be great. It is what it is at that point.

I know nothing of the guy but he has a cajun last name which means he has ties to Louisiana; therefore, he is probably decent at baseball. I will take it.
