Damn. That would hurt. I'd think he'd be in line for a ton of playing time next year. Gotta be honest, though, this system is making it easier and easier to become disconnected on Saturday afternoons in the fall. I don't think I've ever been less invested than I was this season, and it's hard to imagine that changing in the future.

College football has officially gone to shite. Not even worth watching now.

Its all about money to these guys now. I mean, its hard to blame an 18 year old for turning down 7 figs, but yeah, it sucks for the fans.

If that happens I'll officially be nervous about Ryan Williams despite his new tattoo. Because those two do basically everything together.

Yup. I think I'm out. I need a new hobby for Saturdays in the fall now if this is going to be the way from now on.

Well it appears the thing to do now is recruit some high school development players that will stick around and just hammer the transfer portal with money. If you depend on the HS classes you’ll wind up being a young team every year as these guys get a year of development and leave for more money.

Seven figures for a DB with little snaps is wild

Danny Lewis has withdrawn from the portal.

Probably a good move. He started to get increased work at the end of the year it seemed. With two TEs on the way out, you'd think he's in line to get a lot of snaps next year.

I'm kinda shocked at how Ole Miss is cleaning up in the portal so far. I really thought after blowing it this year and missing the playoff after all the money they invested in this season, they'd have a hard time getting their boosters to pony up again.

I mean Bak may end up being a great player in 2 years but he will be a very raw starting DB next year. And the quality of the guys they've gotten isn't nearly what it was last year when they signed an entire defensive front of proven top level talent.
On top of that, they have to. Their roster requires it.

This structure is not going to survive for another generation. The players deserve to get a slice of the pie with the scale of revenue in top end college football. However, the fans are not fans of the players in this sport. The pro leagues can form cults around a player like Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. They're not limited to 4-5 years of eligibility of which they may only have name recognition for 1-3 years. You can build up a brand around the player and turn them into destination television irrespective of your local team preferences. This is why college has always been about the coaches and not the players because the great coaches persist long enough to become a brand.
The players are not wrong to chase a payday but every time this appearance of utter disloyalty to the fans is executed, it is diminishing the interest in the sport. It may take some time for it to come to fruition but I have no doubt that this erosion of fandom will happen. Part of the joy of the sport is seeing someone like Cyrus Jones going from getting cooked by Mike Evans in 2013 to being a reliable corner and spark plug on punt returns in 2015. The structure of this sport is robbing us of a lot of that investment you only get by seeing a guy work his way onto the field or the ups and downs of their career on the field over 3-5 years.

Yeah I’d rather spend time traveling and spending time with family. Saban had the right idea when he decided to exit stage right.

If people don't watch college football then the money dries up. If the roster turns over this much it's going to kill the sport. These guys need 3 year contracts.

I don't think I've missed more than a small handful of live snaps of Alabama football over the last 15 or so years until this season. I missed all of the Mizzou game to go to Birmingham for errands and a nice dinner with my wife. I just left our den and played a video game in my office the entire second half of the Oklahoma game. I knew that game was over at halftime even before Milroe pissed and shite himself live on television in the 2nd half.
We've had some frustrating and disappointing teams even under Saban but I'd always watch those games to the bitter end and often be rewarded for sticking around.
However, something is changing with my relationship to Alabama football. When it ain't fun to watch, I'm out these days. I think that has something to do with how transactional the players are. If they're going to be out if things aren't how they want it, I'll do the same. I dunno...something to chew on...

Right. Changes are going to have to be made soon or the sport will die off.

Exactly. A bunch of people not seeing the forest for the trees.
