I have a funny feeling that someone from this board is responsible for the massive twitter thread that I read a few days ago. I couldn’t make it through all of the comments but the original tweet was “Our starting QB is the same QB who led us to #17”. You can imagine th e responses, bickering and whatnot until the guy tweeted a picture of Tua. Best twitter troll job that I’ve seen in a long time.

I’m still not 100% that Tua starts. I know everyone will say “did you even watch the game” but at the same time we have to remember that Saban sat him on the bench all season knowing how good he was. We all automatically think one half of football changed his mind? Saban watched this kid EVERY DAY in practice. Something kept Saban from playing him. Hurts only lost 2 games, lead his team to back to back national titles, and protected the ball. Im sure that makes Saban feel comfortable. I’ve been on the Tua train since early this season. I want him to start, but I’m not convinced Saban is just going to give him the nod. And that scares me.

JMO bit if I'm coordinator when Jalens in I stack the box. I don't know if he presents the defensive challenges that others do.

Well, like I've said before, if he isn't the projected starter coming out of spring, we won't have to argue about it anymore going into the fall because he won't be here.

Hurts would have lost three games had he continued to start.

Booger was making this point the other day but I just don’t see us getting to the summit with Jalen. Tua needs to get more real game reps. He needs to put his head in the lions mouth against teams in the regular season I/m/o

I'm about 99% he starts. However, there is no guarantee that he lights it up. One magical half and the garbage time stuff from earlier in the year isn't some full proof indicator that he will be the man game in and out. He will start but we may still turn to Jalen Hurts again before his career is over. You never know.

Saban is stubborn. But the cat is out of the bag. And people like Saban don't like looking stupid, which is exactly what he would look like if he played jalen and our offense shite the bed again.

I will never understand exactly why Saban was so reticent to play Tua, especially during the Auburn train wreck. I suspect it boils down to control and comfort zone and all that BS. But regardless, when Tua won that national title, everything changed and there is no going back. Even for Coach Saban.

Saban plays the odds and does whatever gives us the best chance NOT to lose. His job is to win games. Ball control and defense gets the job done most times. We out talent and out physical most teams.

But in the playoff era that won’t be enough.

Boz or anyone in the know - how does the staff feel about Mac Jones? If Jalen did change positions or transfer he'd move into a pretty important role.

As a selfish man I really hope he sticks around and sticks to quarterback. If he changes position then we lose basically two and a half years worth of starts at quarterback. If he has the right mentality he might make a very good safety. He just looks built for it and would have excellent speed as well. Should know something soon but I don't know what to think about Jones because honestly our quarterback evaluations haven't been up to par with the exception of last year.

I was kind of thinking the qb evaluations the last year were the worst so far.

But yeah. I know what you mean. Slow playing Winston while recruiting hard the other kid that never did a thing, as far as I know, was pretty bad.

I don't really see the big deal with us not getting Winston. AJ was really good in 2013, and wasn't the reason that we lost to AU. Winston would've never supplanted him as starter that year.

In 2014, we barely lost to the team that beat the piss out of the team that beat the piss out of Winston and FSU.

Him going to FSU didn't really change anything for us.

Also Barnett was as close to a can't miss prospect as they get, but he just didn't have the chest. I wouldn't consider that a bad eval.

That may be true but if he stays and changes positions you will always have a more than decent emergency back up QB .
One of the things not factored in jalen performance this year was for the first time at bama had to look over his shoulder.
How much Tua gaining on him made him regress is something we may not really know or factored.

He's a coaches son and I think he can be more than just serviceable as the number two guy and
maybe get better passing wise without the responsibility of being the starter.
Right now recruiting wise by not taking the Williams kid while waiting on Emory Jones may have cost us
a good number two QB.Iam not 100% sold on the kid from Arizona , but we will see.

I mean we passed on Williams and corall waiting on Emory Jones.Had we bagged either as an early signed kid.
Maybe we would be more at ease of jalen transferring or switching spots.
Say what we want but jalen coming in for tua on the road if tua was banged up is night and day from mac jones.
jalen has been around the sec circuit and playoffs and that's not something mac jones is prepared
for yet and tua has not faced himself.
Not saying Tua wont rise to the occasion especially after center stage natty.
I am hoping jalen stays and takes the back up role and be ready when or if his numbers called.

Agree about Winston and you're right funky ..Barnett just didn't have what it took to succeed here.

After watching the CFB Final again. I can understand why Nick didn't start Tua over the course of the year. He has been in the program since the spring, he did make a lot of Freshman mistakes and we had some breaks. Thankfully, none of them bit us in the arse.

In the 3rd qtr, Tua threw an INT when the entire team was playing rush. He missed the call from the sideline.
In the 4th qtr, he held onto a ball rather than handing it off to D. Harris for 10+ yards. Resulted in a 1 yard rush.
In the 4th qtr, he almost threw an interception to Sanders (this was more of a break rather than a bad toss)
In the 4th qtr, he almost had a delay of game that would have pushed our FG back 5 yards. Also it cost us a few seconds on the clock at the end of the game.
In Overtime, he took a 16 yard sack rather than throwing it away.

There were a few others.

He is just a gun slinger. In terms of game management, he had a few significant bad decisions that could have cost us. He had about 45-47 plays in the game. Ridley had a few plays that were shite. He dropped a TD on a fade, could have easily caused an INT on the screen play in the 3rd.

Time for Tua to grow and be an awesome QB.

This is definitely the case with Barnett, and the difference between him and Tua. Both have all the natural ability. But some guys just aren't able to utilize their ability when the lights are on and 11 guys want to make his life hell. Barnett, while he was here, couldn't perform when the lights got bright. The lights got bright for Tua and he threw 3 TDs.

I just can't see Jalen Hurts in the rotation at RB or even H back.
On the outside it may seem ideal, but we have some studs there, and without a small element of surprise, I don't see hurts being successful at RB.
When have we even utilized the H back role recently? It's a position that's long in the tooth imo.

Obviously Tua will be the starter, and a role like you mentioned where JH could come in and tote the pigskin in some form of a wildcat role would be ideal, but really wouldn't have the element of surprise. I could see a defense load the box as soon as he enters the game.

Now, if we had a kicker that threatened the opponent with the possibility of making a field goal, Hurts could be lethal as a placeholder with the possibility of taking off with the snap..

Either way, I hope they find some sort of role where the young man can be successful, and make plays for the tide.

No controversy here. Tua is the guy.
