Jayden Daniels Sends Cease-And-Desist To LSU After DJ Pickett Given No. 5

Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU informing the school that it can no longer use his name, image, and likeness.

The move comes after LSU gave Daniels' former No. 5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett, with Daniels reportedly saying he felt "profoundly disappointed" by the decision.

Pickett switched from No. 3 to No. 5 after Lane Kiffin said the number had been promised to the five-star defensive back during his recruitment by LSU's previous coaching staff.

Daniels wore No. 5 during his two seasons in Baton Rouge, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2023 before becoming the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Per ESPN:
quote:

While Daniels' jersey hasn't been retired by the Tigers, it's the first time a player has worn No. 5 since he left the program for the NFL.

"The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU's decision to give Jayden's number to another player," the statement from Daniels' spokesperson said. "Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university."

Pickett wore a No. 3 jersey during his first season with the Tigers in 2025 when he was named a freshman All-American. He led LSU with three interceptions to go with 37 tackles and one sack in 524 defensive snaps.

Pickett was wearing the No. 5 jersey when the Tigers opened preseason practice last week, leading to questions about why first-year LSU coach Lane Kiffin had allowed the jersey swap to happen.

"Jayden made it clear that he did not want his number given to another player, and he believed his wishes would be respected," the statement said. "His Heisman Trophy-winning season and everything he accomplished on and off the field cemented his place in LSU history. To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU."

Joe won a Mf’n National Championship and was LSU’s greatest Quarterback of all time! Jayden although great, DIDN’T.

Do you think Joe would care if 9 was issued? I doubt very seriously he's this soft. I don't understand worrying about a number. This is absolutely nuts to me. Very disappointed by Daniels here. Spurrier's number was retired at Florida and he made them un-retire it. This is so silly to care about someone wearing a number you once wore. What in the world?

Yep! Watching the quarterbacks show on Netflix shows how inserted she is into everything. Which is why there are no other women around him. Seems kinda odd.

I am a huge JD fan. I think he is way out of bounds on this.
This selfish attitude is very unbecoming of a leader. All about him, and his wishes, and his number. All he did for LSU. Bro, we gave you the opportunity. You aren't from here, and you didn't pick us, until we paid you handsomely for your services. You couldn't win a Heisman at Arizona St. That is why you bounced. You needed us to increase your profile. You don't own that number. The school decides who and what takes place with the numbers. Billy Cannon is the ONLY number that is out of circulation. Others have been honored (Bert Jones, Charles Alexander, Jerry Stovall) but their numbers are still available as of Jan 1, 2007 per university policy.

Focus on your NFL career and keep it moving Jayden. This is a bad look for you. Grow up and stop letting petty people run your business.

It’s his agent/manager mother behind this, has to be.

Way to go Daniels. If you wanted to alienate the LSU fan base, this is a good way to do it. You just moved yourself several notches below Burrow and Cannon
user avatar
If LSU issued 9 to someone else there is no way Burrow would whine about it or threaten LSU.

How do you know this? Burrow cares more about Ohio that shitty lsu

I'm sure that's exactly what he told you the last time you were hanging out at his house, having a meal, sharing a beer.

Buddy as great as you were at LSU and as loved as your are. You won the Heisman. An individual award. You didn’t win championships. You will always hold a special place in the hearts of LSU fans, but this selfish move will tarnish that for sure!

I have always been a huge fan of Jayden. Still am. This, however, is a bridge way too far for me.

I really hope he changes his tune. It's an honor to have your number retired, not a guarantee by any means.
user avatar
I'm so disappointed in his family doing this.

This is the weirdest nonsense I've ever heard. You're number hasn't been retired. It's free to use until it gets retired. Focus on your career and keep LSU as a shining achievement in your rear view mirror. You did well so don't F this up by being a baby about a number that you don't own

"His number" it's LSU's number. He used it and we gave him a platform.

It's sad to see Jayden's such a bitch and controlled by his mommy

Exactly, how can you send a cease and desist to something you don’t own? I like JD but this is weird.

His jersey should be retired and his name permanently on display in the stadium, not his number.

Yeah. With enough great players we’d run out of numbers. Can only use 00-99

You can’t retire every great player’s number. Especially single digit numbers in an era when your top recruits are often requesting specific numbers (usually the single digit ones) and will actually factor that into their decision to commit

Well.. what he’s gonna do is damage his name image and likeness with the fanbase..so yeah be petty. You don’t own 5 Mr Daniels

What does he gain from this except a ton of bad publicity? What possibly good comes from this for him? Is there money he can sue for? I don't understand what this helps
