Danny Kanell Responds To Saban, Says Bama Didn’t 'Earn' 2017 National Championship
© Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports
Earlier this week Alabama head coach Nick Saban finally responded to UCF crowning themselves 2017 National Champions, even though his team went home with the College Football Playoff trophy. Saban said...
quote:

...self-proclaimed is not the same as actually earning it.
On Wednesday, college football analyst Danny Kanell said the Crimson Tide didn't "earn" their title either...

A couple of points..Bama smashed his FSU team in the opener and they never were the same. Auburn was NOT the SEC Champ UGA was. and Bama beat them. UCF did not play the schedule that Auburn or Alabama did. Let UCF try and run the table playing in the SEC West.

It’s funny he calls them out on their self proclaimed titles.

The penis envy is strong. Still trying to talk Alabama's football program down to the level of your team. Imagine that. That is what losers do...then,now,and forever.

Wrong, he could argue Georgia was the best SEC team but not Auburn.

Kanell makes a couple valid points here regarding Bama backing into another NC while the conference champ got beat by an undefeated team in another bowl, but winning the actual NC game pretty much invalidates that point as it did back in 2012. I saw in another article that Scott Frost mentioned Bama's titles, as well, though coming from him it's more understandable since he coached UCF. However, I think Frost might have been referencing other NC claims, such as 5 titles claimed up to and including 1941 that are easily debunked, or the 1964 title they share with an undefeated Arkansas, even though they actually lost their bowl game to a Texas team Arkansas beat earlier in the season, while Arkansas finished undefeated beating #2 Nebraska. What's funny about that 1964 title is that Notre Dame was also recognized as NC by the National Football Foundation, but Notre Dame, chooses not to claim it. Coincidentally, Notre Dame does claim half of the 1973 NC with Alabama because they beat Alabama head-to-head in that bowl game and finished undefeated. That one must have been particularly embarrassing to the UPI, because they changed their rules the next year to recognize a national champion only AFTER the final bowl games were played. I really think these are the claims Frost alludes to. I don't think he really believes UCF's overall 2017 body of work compares to Alabama's-- I think he was just astounded at an Alabama coach's claim that "self-proclaimed" NCs aren't the same as "earning it." The real rub here has nothing to do with Alabama, but a system that couldn't get an undefeated AAC team in a playoff because there's only room for 4 teams, and UCF made it clear this should be re-examined by defeating an exceptional Auburn team.

I mean that the Division champ got beat by UCF, not the Conference champ (who got beat by Alabama, which goes even further to invalidate Kanell's argument).

Auburn was not the conference champs genius, Georgia was.

You're like 2 days behind me on making that correction myself, "genius." Note the other reply. I would say nice try, but really, all you had to do was look at the only reply...

This is all Auburn's fault. All they had to do was beat UCF. That's it.

Wait, Kannell thinks Auburn was the best team in the SEC last year? Who knew?

Except for that whole "Auburn is the best team in the SEC" thing.

I like this guy, we need more people picking this fight, maybe we will get a bigger playoff system. More playoff games are so much better than these meaningless garbage bowl games.

Don't remember Kanell taking this stance when Ohio St won the Title not winning their division.

Do you remember Saban lobbying against OSU that year because they didn't win their conference? Saban is a two faced POS!

I love how he’s saying a team that didn’t win their conference can in fact be the best team in the conference. But only when it’s convenient to his argument
