According to a new feature from ESPN's Chris Low, Kalen DeBoer was one of only two coaches Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne considered to takeover for Nick Saban...

The other was Florida State's Mike Norvell, who eventually signed a lucrative contract extension with his current employer. Byrne told Low he spoke with both men on Thursday, Jan. 11, one day after Saban announced his retirement.
"Both had what Byrne was looking for: a proven head coach who had won on a big stage and shown the propensity to develop players," Low wrote. "Byrne declined to go into detail about whom he talked to first or his pecking order. But he had serious conversations with both coaches the day after Saban retired."
"I think that piece of it was intriguing and exciting to me when going through this process of looking to be the head coach," DeBoer said of the powerhouse Saban built. "[Saban's] made it an amazing job, as have others that come before him, too. And so, yeah, the legacy he leaves, you can’t help but notice it. Carrying on that tradition, that’s my goal."
