According to a new feature from ESPN's Chris Low, Kalen DeBoer was one of only two coaches Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne considered to takeover for Nick Saban...
quote:

The other was Florida State's Mike Norvell, who eventually signed a lucrative contract extension with his current employer. Byrne told Low he spoke with both men on Thursday, Jan. 11, one day after Saban announced his retirement.

"Both had what Byrne was looking for: a proven head coach who had won on a big stage and shown the propensity to develop players," Low wrote. "Byrne declined to go into detail about whom he talked to first or his pecking order. But he had serious conversations with both coaches the day after Saban retired."

"I think that piece of it was intriguing and exciting to me when going through this process of looking to be the head coach," DeBoer said of the powerhouse Saban built. "[Saban's] made it an amazing job, as have others that come before him, too. And so, yeah, the legacy he leaves, you can’t help but notice it. Carrying on that tradition, that’s my goal."

Those were the only two he considered. Third parties may have reached out of agents of other coaches and for whatever reason, those coaches removed themselves, thus Greg only considered these two.

It's amazing how badly LSU fans want the Bama coaching search to have come down to multiple people turning down the best job in college football.

Lol. Everyone knows their 1st choice was Lanning.

DeBeor was at least #3. Tuscaloosa channel 13 news “confirmed” on air that Dan Lanning was in Tuscaloosa and on campus according to his source. News anchor claimed to work for the Bama in the past and still has contacts with in the university. Bama goes 9-3 this year!!

Some info around FSU that only came out a couple of weeks ago said that Norvell was gone and that FSU already had a private jet on standby to go to a certain SEC town. One last attempt very, very late Thursday night with Norvell and the new numbers got him to stay. I'm sure Bammers will never accept that Norvell was the first choice, but that's what I got from our end and it's about as reliable as reliable gets

Glad he stayed. He's a great young coach with a very bright future. That "alternative" was not palatable to me.

Yeah..we should believe you and all since you’re so reliable. All of y’all melting over Alabama publicly is why nobody takes you seriously. Everybody sees the jealousy.

Pretty much the whole country was against you, I'm not sure where you got "nobody"

I am surprised he admitted there was a second coach. Most AD’s lie and say “he was our guy” when they looked at a dozen dudes.

Total BS! I guarantee there were more names on his list before Deboer. Saying what he's saying now makes him look good, but the reality is there were a lot more coaches that said no before he went to Deboer!

Just like Fifthchoiceioni

I mean, not giving Dan Lanning a call is a much worse look than admitting that Kailyn D was your third choice imo

Why would burn want to interview a coach who was spanked by Deboer in their three prior meetings..we are happy with a coach who does nothing but when and his .904 career win percentage
user avatar
well, bc Lanning is younger, has ties to Bama/Saban and experience recruiting the Deep South/Florida. my original point was that Byrne absolutely reached out to Lanning and was quickly rebuffed, so why be disingenuous about it at this point?

There is no evidence that this ever happened... Pure speculation on your part.. Deboer is a much better coach based on the available evidence... Alabama made the right call
