In an interview with USA Today, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne asserted that the SEC Championship Game is ready to be abolished...
quote:

“I think the ship has sailed. It’s run its course…” Byrne said. “It’s a great event. I don’t like the idea of it going away, but I think it’s reality, with an expanded playoff.”

The SECCG was different than the others because it always had huge national implications and was a great spectacle for 34 years but it doesn’t make sense now. When you hardly ever saw certain teams play in each it was cool but now everybody is playing everybody every 2 years. Had Bama and UGA both won their 2nd round games they would have played a third time last year. The regular season champ should be good enough now with 9 conference games and the rotation we have.

Maybe if they move the game to Birmingham, Bama AD might reconsider the merits of the game.

None of these ideas are making the sport better as far as I’m concerned

I don't disagree but I find it funny the timing. Right after Bama gets waxed and almost missed the playoffs because of it.

I strongly disagree ! If you are gonna cancel one why not all ? Conference Championship games are super important and help with who is gonna play who in the bowl games .

Alabama almost missed out on playoffs by losing SECCG. Runner Up should get in no matter what

If I was guaranteed a playoff spot, why risk your starters to injury?

I knew playoffs would ruin college football. No turning back now.

If getting rid of the champ game = more SEC games to determine the actual winner of the conf, I'd say playoffs resulted in a good thing.

In the past I’d say “well by God if Alabama wants it then I know it’ll get done”. But now with the current playoff format that’ll most likely only expand from here, there is no reason to still play a conference championship game. It really serves no purpose now and all it does is potentially get key players hurt before the playoffs. Teams are already having to play 2 to 3 extra games now to even get to the championship game.

That game makes money. How are you going to convince the folks in charge to get rid of a game that makes money?

Will getting an extra team in the playoffs make more? That's the only way I can see.

Totally agree. It only makes sense with the playoff system we have now. Why would you want to guarantee that one of your best 2 teams has an extra loss before the playoff selection?

About right

Then how do they decide SEC Champions? Just pick from a straw poll with eyes closed and call it the day?

Whichever team makes it the furthest in the playoffs? I don’t know.

Stop with all the money hunger BS. Expanding playoffs is not needed and makes it more like pro games.

Respectfully, I have a hard time agreeing that 'expanding playoffs" is what is making the college game more like pro games. For me, it's kinda the fact that 'professional' literally means making money, and now college is all about money. LOL

I am for any kind of expansion to the playoffs so that some day Mizzou will have a chance to make the playoffs in the future.
