re: Did our 2024 Run Game suck, is Brad Davis terrible, or maybe we just didn't run enough?

When Dellinger got hurt our OL went to crap. He covered up for Chester in pass protection by closing up one A gap and was a better run blocker than Mubenga. Our TE’s missed blocks on a regular basis which killed a lot of plays.
THIS. There was a MARKED drop when Dellinger got hurt.

Fifty.
Fifty.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not happy with where LSU basketball is at the moment. I'm just tired of the constant Will Wade discussion. I'd rather focus on replacing McMahon.

What a shite coach.
Wade isn't a shite coach. He was a #12 seed playing a #5 seed. If you expected Clemson to stay down then you don't watch basketball. The point is McNeese didn't panic, didn't pull into a shell. They slugged it out.
Congrats to Will Wade

Hey, seriously, congratulations to Will Wade. What an accomplishment.
I'm sorry things went down the way they did at LSU, and I hope you have a great future. (Hopefully not in the SEC at some point.)
And I really hope we get a good replacement for McMahon sooner rather than later. And I'm mature enough to realize it won't be you.
There.
Can we freaking move on?!

[embed]I just don’t get it. He could recruit but was a shitty X’s and O’s guy when it came down to playing competition[/embed]
I don't really agree with this, the team was playing at a much higher level than it had been or has since. Yes, we had good talent, but not Shaq and Chris Jackson level talent IMO.
That said, I distinctly recall not being happy with the "street ball" undisciplined style the team played. I honestly can't remember if that was just at the start of his tenure or the whole time, but let's not wear the purple colored glasses and say he was the next coming of Coach K. I don't think he was.
I think he would definitely be a step up over who we have today but I also don't think he's our ride or die. People have to stop living in the extremes on this.

re: How do we know a high school coach will be a good college position coach?
Posted by ShadowTigerTX on 3/6/25 at 7:20 pm
At some point, all coaches are new. You have to look at what they accomplished prior into going into coaching.
In this case, he was a great player in college and the NFL at this position, which counts for something, and also has been a high school coach in an area that included this position, which also counts for something.
It's not like we're going into this blind.
Is it the same as hiring someone who has been a DL coach for another college program? No. But it's not a blind crap shoot either. And especially considering where we are on the calendar, this is a good hire.

Maybe I'm just too old, having followed LSU football since the 80s, but expecting your team to win the national championship every year - or three - is insane. That takes a once-in-a-generation talent at coach. And maybe not even that, anymore, given the way the system has been changing with NIL and the transfer portal.
In the last 50 years, only 21 teams have won a national championship. With few exceptions, they're the same blue bloods that have always been.
When I started following LSU football, we were absolutely not considered a blue blood. Maybe second tier. Today I don't think anyone believes we aren't.
So, my absolute requirement is that we remain a blue blood in the eyes of the world - that we don't turn into Nebraska.
To me, that doesn't mean we can't have a couple off years now and then, or that we can't have a run of bad luck. But it does mean we should be playoff contenders in November most of the time. We should never have back-to-back losing seasons. We should consistently have top 15 recruiting rankings (for whatever that's worth these days). We should be a destination for coaches, and a breeding ground for head coaches.
It *doesn't* mean we have to be in the National Championship game every couple of years.
I certainly hope we DO have (or get) that once-in-a-generation situation, and that we DO play for the NC every single year. I'm disappointed when we aren't. But as long as we're delivering a good team that we can be proud of, the coach should not be on the hot seat.
That all said, where I'm frustrated with Kelly is that he is not acknowledging issues and visibly addressing them. Everyone, every team will have issues. Kelly made some mistakes in hiring, and I think there are some issues with how the team is coached. I want to see (not hear) changes related to starting strong, having more toughness, being an elite defense, having an elite kicking game, having creative playcalling, having a strong run game, and having a level of individual execution and "want to" aligned with the talent level of these players.
But I don't agree we've regressed. I think we played above our heads in 2022, and had an amazing Heisman QB in 2023. And we had some key injuries this year -- how much did losing Dellinger affect us? The defense has improved (but still has a ways to go). We're getting good recruits, and I think we're finally starting to figure out transfers and NIL. We're moving in the right direction overall. As someone who went to every Curley Hallman game in Tiger Stadium, I almost can't believe how much melt there is over an 8-4 season.
So, the bottom line is: no, I don't think CBK should be fired next year for not winning a NC. But he should be on a very hot seat if the team doesn't make strong steps forward. And those steps go beyond talent level of the team at this point - coaching needs to take strong steps forward as well.
Wow, my first real rant.

I agree the defense was the main problem this year (and as was said, it improved as the year went on). But the O-line was definitely a problem too. Joe was running for his life (or just getting swallowed up) on at least half their plays.

This isn't true.
Here's the data:

And you're right - I can't do math - the Bengals salary is 21st in the league, not 19th.

I'd imagine you probably want them to pay Tee Higgins too after seeing how their offense looked without him Saturday.
FWIW, Tee already said publically he doesn't care (as much) about the money, he wants to stay with Joe and Ja'Marr.
But that said, the Bengals have a total salary of $221M this year. That's 19th in the league, and means they have about $57M in cap space.
Now, money isn't everything - the Saints are #1 in salary at $354M and they're over the cap by like $78M. But Kansas City spends $36M more than the Bengals. Buffalo spends $50M more than the Bengals.
The Bengals have consistently been pretty cheap. If they want to win, they have to loosen up the purse strings a bit.
They also need to get better coaching, and better luck re: injuries, no doubt. But they're wasting Joe's prime years. And reducing the number of them.

I'm impressed with Nix this year compared to his college career.

Firing the DC, both line coaches, and linebackers coach.
I hope this signals they seriously want to win and are willing to build a good team around Joe and Ja'Marr. It's not just on the coaches though, they've got to spend some money on improving the O-line and improving the defense overall. Felt like 2023 LSU a lot this year, but with more sacks.

I'm generally in agreement with the OP but will add:
1. The OL has to significantly improve, which will depend a lot on who is replacing the players who are leaving. (And how well the center position improves.)
2. Playcalling/execution on offense, especially in short/medium pass routes (we were killer with slants and similar plays in 2019) and in the red zone. (And it occurs to me that if we're having problems with short/medium pass routes, that could be the problem in the red zone.)
3. More QB runs, both designed and improvised. The defense has to respect Nuss' ability and willingness to run. He doesn't have to be a "running QB" like JD5.

Among many other good points already made in this thread, I'll add:
Nuss has to run more. Designed runs. Ad hoc runs. He has to keep it on option plays sometimes.
The defense completely ignores his threat to run, and if he runs once or twice a game, that's a trade off they're willing to make to stop the other plays.
