I got a question. Is there a difference with how Kirby had managed players on defense vs offense?

Smith looks like a Calvin Ridley clone. Good speed, good hands, absolutely superb route running.

Yeah. I think our WR's are pretty dang good, the problem is our QB is well below average at deep throws and defenses are not respecting the deep ball at all. On top of that, the QB isn't seeing the open guys at all times.

Catching everything that hits your hands...running the right route when a CB blitzes from your side. This is shite Bama just did a lot better.

Guys can be wide open and it sucks when a QB misses them, but unless it is identifiable pre snap, they may get missed in the progression. Sometimes its on the QB and sometimes it is not.
Yet, You have to catch the football... even when the throw isn’t perfect and you have to understand coverages so you can help your QB. #10 does a good job with that, but 1 and 7 still have work to do.

The most salient point the writer made was regarding how Bama and Saban gameplan. Saban and that Bama offense literally won that game by relying on their 3 best players....Harris (31-152), Smith (11-167), and Waddle (6-161). 480yds of total offense from the three best players on that team. Their TOTAL offense was 564yds, so 85% of their total offense went through those three top players.

Which also means that 11 players on our vaunted "elite" defense couldn't handle 3 guys, so maybe our offense wasn't entirely the problem.

Kirby needs to either stop making promises to recruits about playing time

Then a lot of top recruits might not come, and he'll get crucified for not doing whatever it takes to get them.

quote:

or he needs to do a better job of identifying the top 3-4 players on the team and ride them to victories.

That assumes that those top 3-4 players can carry the team to win after win. They have to be in the right positions to do it. Bama happens to have an incredible set of receivers, so they'll score on just about anybody.

I mean, who has watched every game this season and thought, "wow, sure am glad that Zeus and midget boy Cook are getting more carries than KennyMc and Milton!"?

Except that just about everyone was hailing Zeus and Cook as the guys who we'd ride to a national title up until the first game of this season. So fan expectation wildly missed the mark, as is pretty common.

Has no one mentioned that Milton was dinged up all summer and fall and McIntosh is dinged up right now?

They are not finished products. They are getting better each week.

They were? On here? News to me.

I saw some folks on here touting Zues but certainly not Cook and I
thought both played well vs Bama.

Not many on here thought we had NC offense after Newman opted
out and then Blalock's injury but we certainly have enough pieces to win the east and compete with Bama for a conference title.

Yeah I don’t remember anyone predicting cook to be outstanding. I remember wishing him a breakout season. But Milton and mcintosh look to be the best duo rn

I liked him going into the season and thought he had the tools to helps us.I was one of the very few on here.

I never thought he was used properly with our offense last year and Monken is doing a much better job of taking advantage of his talents.

Is incongruent with...

I do agree with the spirit of this. The way penalties are called to almost always favor the offense, the QB needs to throw to the playmaker downfield, even if he's covered, and let him fight for the ball. He either catches it, or gets a flag drawn. Maybe it's intercepted but the fact is that Pickens is a better receiver and overall athlete than 99% of any defender covering him, and he's not going to let the ball get taken away in a fight for it. And if it does get intercepted, at least it's way the frick down field and amounts to a punt.

Pickens is a great athlete, he needs to run better routes. That’s the difference between him and the 1%

Pickens has to find ways to get open and beat doubles.

I was thinking the same thing. Waddle and especially Smith are great route runners. Every movement is smooth and fluid, and Mac Jones can put it on them from anywhere on the field.

I made a Smith/Calvin Ridley comparison earlier in this thread and the superb route running is a big reason for it.

I will submit that part of being in the 1% is having a QB throw the ball to you downfield more often so you can prove it.
