Those numbers are for the Chinese only. Elderly people in China are overwhelmingly heavy smokers with poor health.

Chances are the chinese have way downplayed the extent of it.

I also dont think it is only chinese in those numbers, but the smoking aspect isnt enough to account for the drastic difference in death rates.

That was also with China building new hospitals after theirs went way beyond capacity, and I still havent heard of us doing that here.

The death rate isn't really the issue. Its how contagious it is, how fast it is spreading and the 20% hospitalization rate. That could be a huge # of people that require hospitalization and a serious drain on the healthcare and other emergency services. Compound that with absenteeism and lack of productivity, possible impacts on utilities and other public services.

They built pre-fab buildings without interior walls and put in thousands of beds. Sterile indeed.

When compared to keeping them outside in the dark, or packed in crowded hallways, its a far better option.

Its all connected. The death rate will certainly go up more than it should if the health care system has no room for them or people to care for them.

Current state of media and (dim) politicians...over nothing worse than the flu. Imagine that.

No shite. 2 kids in my sons kindergarten class get the flu in the same week...they watch the kids extra to wash hands.

Teacher gets COVID 45 miles away in the same county and they shut down the whole county school system and office

As with most things, reality is somewhere in the middle. It’s not just the flu and there is cause for concern but it’s also not the plague and people hoarding cleaning supplies are idiots. The biggest threat isn’t the disease to the individual but the stress it can put on the healthcare system given the rate of infection and the lack of a cure. People acting like it’s not a big deal out of some sense of social defiance and contrarianism are going to make this worse. It is a big deal but all we can do is be careful

What’s not ideal is that our president is one of these people.

Because it’s different than the flu.

Well also the fact that there is no vaccine and while healthy people should be fine for the most part it can certainly kill older people and they can catch that from being around infected healthy people.

We're trying to contain it as much as possible before it becomes a pandemic

Children actually die from the flu. There's been ZERO COVID-19 deaths WORLDWIDE for kids under 10 years old

BTW there was over 1000 deaths of children in the US from H1N1 in 2009.

So is this the flu or is it not the flu? How at risk is my kid? Maybe I should just err on the side of caution until this dies down....

No idea but the flu and especially H1N1 were far more deadly to kids. One of the 1st fatalities
from H1N1 was an 18 month old infant.

If you look at COVID-19 cases vs worldwide population (1 per 100,000) I would think those are pretty good odds.

Could the quality of health care in China be a factor? The doctors that first reported the new strain were told to keep quiet.

University of Alabama in Birmingham developed a vaccine several years ago that worked on SARS and MERS, similar to Covid-19. China is now testing this to see if it will be effective on Covid-19. They should know by mid-April. If so, it can be produced and distributed quickly. Currently other labs are working on vaccines but it may be a year before they hit the market.

Take a good long look at the map.

37 of 50 states plus Puerto Rico have confirmed cases.

All but two of the top ten metro areas have confirmed cases.

And everyone knows this is likely a very small sampling of what's actually out there.

You ain't containing shite.

This is a dog and pony show.

Institutions want to show they are doing something.

Governments want to show they are in control.

Political actors want to leverage this in any way they can.. ie Never let a good crisis go to waste....

"Shut it all down!! Lets Contain it! Let's slow it down!"

"We're in charge! We're the smart ones! Listen to us!

This is a clown show.
