I think we connection with Pitman alone is going to mean that we don't go nuts and score 50 on Arkansas and their own stadium. Plus the offense is going to be vanilla AF, by virtue of how early it is in the season, and we don't want to show our hand for some of the upcoming big games.

Not sure if the team has the luxury of underutilizing this time to work things out. I'm not suggesting we open up the playbook much, but Mathis and the receivers have to have plenty of intermediate and downfield passing reps to get ready for Bama. Boring offense isn't an option.

I didn't say I was happy about it, just that I think that's what we're going to see.

I'll be happy if we can keep our players away from serious illness and injury while they destroy Auburn and Florida with improved offense.

Have no idea how you know this.
He's not lacking in athleticism or the tools to to excel at WR.

Landers can add this last piece to his game, there’s no reason why he can’t have an All-SEC caliber season. There’s no reason why NFL teams wouldn’t show interest in him.

He just seems to continually shoot himself in the foot and needs to finish plays.

After watching the Auburn game, I'll be happy with excellent tackling with no missed defensive assignments, consistent pressure on the QB, and mistake free offense. Get that without injuries and I'm ecstatic.

It's definitely enough to beat the Barn.

1) more explosive plays. I dont care if it is run or pass or both. I didnt like the Vandy game last year. Every drive was a grind.

Other than the return game, we were not explosive. We had a few long passes that were just out of bounds. Maybe we are close in the passing game? But there were not a lot of big holes in the run block schemes.

This will be a big concern as we face tougher defenses who will make sustaining drives more difficult.

2) more havoc on defense. TFL and Turnovers. Preferably 8+. Sadly, anything over 6 would be an improvement over 2019.

4 tackles for loss and 3 INTs. There is room for improvement. Seeing Jalen Carter run down the sack from behind was exciting. Nolan Smith might be a guy who racks up a ton of TFL if they attack his edge. Lecounte made up for the blown assignment with the 1 handed INT.

I know the interior DL didnt get a lot of push in the backfield. But damn... if Arkansas couldnt get more than 2 yards up the middle. When they did get more than 2, it was only 3. We were stout on that interior run defense.

3) Win special teams.

Matt Landers holding penalty pissed me off. But outside of that, the coverage and return games were near perfect. We burned 1 timeout in punt return. Understandable with no spring. I hope that wont be a recurrence because that timeout may have been the difference between a field goal attempt and touchdown.

quote:

I'm really hoping that we can be a better team than 2017 on the 2020 season.
5.5 TFL per conference game
1.5 turnovers per conference game
87% completion from hotrod
44 average yards per punt
27 rushing TDs against the conference
15 passing TDs against the conference
34.6 PPG

Better than 2017 will give us the prize we need.

The defense and special teams are definitely on pace for a great season.

Because of them, the team is on pace for 35ppg.

Offensively, we are on pace for 20 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs.
The run blocking was disappointing. And that will make life difficult for whichever QB we call upon. We've got to do better in drawing up plays (more toss sweep against slower defenses. The arkie edge defenders were giving up the b gap all day with Mathis at qb), qb reads (mathis looked like he kept a couple when he should have handed off, and he handed off when he should have kept), and reading our blocks (mathis would run right into a wr blocking out wide instead of cutting up to get what he can. That Zeus jump cut for the touchdown was sick. Not a lot of vision from the other backs).

I saw a lot to be hopeful about and a lot things to be concerned about.

1: The defense played excellent. Not a ton of sacks, but plenty of pressure that resulted in turnovers. Great pursuit all around and these guys smothered the run.

2. Cochran was a good hire. ST looked great - better than it has in years. (Still wondering why Landers is on the field).

3. QB is obviously a concern. Mathis ain't ready, but next week will tell us if Stetson can be the guy to take us to an SECCG or if getting Mathis ready needs to take priority.

That said, I wanted mistake free ball and Stetson can do it.

3. Everything about the running game needs to be better. I don't see this squad winning if the plan is to throw 50 times a game v Bama.

4. Penalties were cleaned up eventually. I'm convinced part of it was a steady hand leading the offense and everyone just settling TF down. Can't say Saturday was even close to disciplined ball, though.

5. Pass blocking was pretty good (vs Arky) but I'm concerned about the line. Second half was much better than the first. Let's hope second game is better than the first as well.

Franks definitely got rid of the ball quickly. Eventually, I will rewatch the game. I might stopwatch how quick he got the ball out. There wont be a ton of sacks in a gameplan like that. I agree about the pressure. A lot of the turnovers and passes defended were because of hits that he was taking.
