That was Saturday and it was a mandatory no football day set by NCAA rules.... whatever those are

This kid had a monster high school career. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets significant playing time.

I've heard some chatter from other observers talking about this kid. It shouldn't be a surprise. About 6 months ago he stated he could bench press 405, squat over 600 and ran a 4.48 in the 40. That sounds like beast numbers to me for a true frosh.

We already know we can throw screens all day, teams were teeing up on them last season for loss of yardage.

Well, downfield passing has been a pain the last 2 seasons.

Branch was our leading receiver and 90% of his receptions were some form of screen.

I do remember that. I also saw every game last season. People here and elsewhere were on Bobo for calling all those screens and short passes. Any OC will call the plays he thinks his personnel can execute. If Bobo called few deep passes he likely believed Gunnar could not execute them well. I remember Stetson threw screens and outs to RBs, TEs, and WRs, and there were many big gains from them. Maybe now the players aren't blocking as well as a few years ago.

Losing Bobo hurt sure, but he also played noticeably worse.

1- by FAR our best offensive playmaker was branch so it makes logical sense to get the ball in his hands as quickly as possible.
2- Those screens were great setups to throw deeper passes later in games. I can recall a few instances where we faked the screen and had a TE or slot guy WIDE open because that whole side of the field was running to the screen
3- An OC calls plays within the framework of what the HC wants. Plain and simple, if Kirby thought we threw too many screens or weren't imaginative enough with playcalling, we'd be calling something different.
4- Having said all of the above, I do think we probably threw more screens that necessary and would have liked to see us throw it downfield more.

Kenny Mac, Bowers, and Ladd make the screen game easy. Not quite as easy throwing them to Arian Smith.

I think you should go rewatch some of the games. I just watched the tech game and bobo being or not being there had nothing to do with gunner missing some of the wide open guys there. It was certainly a common theme that he would tuck and run or choose to pass out wide when he still wasn’t under pressure. The blocking was fine, he had time to make the plays, just had ghosts around him.
Gunner has taken some massive hits, so I totally get being a little quick on those decisions, but if he can stay in the pocket for 1 more second scanning the field he may have had a better shot at seeing the play open up

Yes. I started a thread during the season showing numerous plays in which we scored TDs or had huge chunk plays off of fake screens, but the anti-Bobo rants get more clicks.

That’s my thing too.
If bobo drew up a play where a man was running free and gunner chooses to dish it out wide or tuck the ball and run it, how much of that is really on bobo? Gunner has the experience and enough between the ears to make those decisions.
