How someone can beat Georgia

There's a good argument to be made that, if you have to dig deep into the advanced metrics to make a case against Georgia, it's probably not worth making the case. Indeed, you'll hear no Bulldogs slander here. Kirby Smart has the nation's best team.

But let's say we're given a message from the future, and it tells us that Georgia won't win the national championship. In that universe, what might have gone wrong?

For the bulk of this season, the conventional wisdom was that an offensive juggernaut would go toe-to-toe with Georgia's overwhelming defense, and more often than not, the name of that juggernaut was Ohio State. As the great Lee Corso would say ... Not so fast, my friend.

Michigan's pass rush exposed Ohio State's vulnerabilities, and the duo of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo made the Buckeyes' talented offense look mortal. It's not hard to see how Georgia would've done the same.

And all of that suggests we might have been entirely wrong about the blueprint for beating the Dawgs, and in retrospect, it should've been obvious.

Using offensive and defensive expected points added (EPA) for each of Georgia's 10 Power 5 opponents, the Bulldogs have played four above-average offensive units: Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky. Georgia dominated all three games.

The Dawgs have played just one above-average defense, however. That was Clemson, in the opener. Georgia didn't score an offensive touchdown. Or consider a far more relatable metric: yards per dropback. The three best defenses Georgia faced were Clemson, Florida and South Carolina. The three best offenses were Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky. Against the top offenses, Georgia's defensive EPA dropped by about 10 points from its Power 5 average. Against the top defenses, its offense declined by nearly 14 points.

In other words, Georgia is likely to struggle more against a great defense than a great offense.

This shouldn't be a surprise, given where Georgia's best talent resides. On defense, the Dawgs are loaded with blue-chippers at every level. Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, Derion Kendrick -- there's a long list of potential defensive MVPs. On offense, however, Georgia looks human. Stetson Bennett has been wonderful, but he's not a future NFL star. The backfield of Zamir White, James Cook, Kendall Milton and crew are all talented, but none have been All-Americans. Aside from tight end Brock Bowers, there isn't a true five-star superstar on that side of the ball. So, which unit was always more likely to have a bad game: the blue-chip D or the makeshift O?

All of this gets to another interesting point: With Oklahoma and Ohio State losing in Week 13 (and Alabama struggling against Auburn), there's a good chance that the best offenses in the country won't be in the playoff this year, but some truly impressive defenses (Oklahoma State, Michigan and Cincinnati all rank in the top 10 in adjusted defensive EPA) could be.

Again, none of this is to suggest Georgia shouldn't be the prohibitive favorite should the Dawgs make the playoff. But if they do, the path to a national championship might actually be a bit tougher without Alabama, Oklahoma and Ohio State in their way. -- David Hale

Frankily, The SEC is still the best conference so the majority of the offenses and defenses were above average.

College football is down as a whole

He tends to be a bit outlandish in his phrasing but I’ve been wondering the same thing all season. Everyone kept saying our defense hasn’t played a great offense but that has been proven untrue. But aside from Clemson, a game where we scored 3 offensive points, we haven’t played a great defense. Kentucky or Florida might be second best to Clemson, but obviously neither of them are very good. Most of these types of articles are dumb but this one makes a valid point.

Any defense will get worn down if their offense can't stay on the field. I feel pretty comfortable our D will keep their O off the field more than the other way around.

I thought Michigan's D was impressive

I agree it's a very valid point, but I also don't see how Cincy, Michigan, or Okie State could score enough on our defense to make that point come into play/matter

As long as our defense comes to play none of those teams go over 10 points on us.

If we can't score more than 10 in a CFP game, then we don't deserve anything nice.

This is why I'm amused by the Bama folks who think this is going to be a game where they score 42.

Of the teams left including this weekend, only Bama and Michigan imho can hang with us.

I truly believe this Saturday is the National Title, in terms of level of difficulty.

If we sail past Alabama, I don't think any of these other jokers can approach us on a neutral field.

I'm not sure our offensive performance against Clemson back in September with a hurt JTD, a bunch of green WRs without experience, losing Ratledge on the first or second series...is indicative of how we'd play today. I truly think our offense is much better now.

No doubt, our offense blossomed once Bennett took over and our receivers matured.

For better or worse, once Stet got the call, the WRs started playing inspired football.

Give Pickens a few weeks of practice and I doubt anyone will be able to stop this offense.

I dno't think this is going out on much of a limb here; we've known for a while now that if/when we trip up it aint gonna be becuase of our defense. Our undoing would be becuase our offense ran into trouble. If we lose a game this year it's definitely not going to be a 38-35 kinda thing, it'd probably be closer to like 17-13.

Fact is stetson has never been in a situation this year where we're down by double digits in the 3rd quarter and we've got to put a drive together and score. And honestly, as good as our defense is we may not ever have to! Which would be ideal obviously.

But bama's defnese is goign to be the first defense since game 1 that can truly make life difficult on us for more than just a half. They do a great job at stopping the run so who knows what'll happen if stetson is forced to throw it 30 times. At any rate, one thing we know for certain is that our defense is so good that we're going to be in it against anyone one play

I want Cincy so bad

Pickens went for 135 yards on 7 catches with a tudder last year on them. No telling what any one of our guys could do this go around the block.

Everyone will be on 100 yard game alert

It would be awesome to see Washington get 100.

I don't know shite about cincy this year other than that good QB ritter from last yera is still there. Did they lose any other big pieces? Are they about the same caliber of opponent that we saw last yera?

I think we'll do well against Alabama, but wouldn't it be poetic justice if our offense struggles in the first half and JT walks out after half-time and lights them up and brings us a victory?

BTW, I support Bennett, but that situation would be pretty sweet after what Alabama did to us with their backups the past two meetings in the post season.

I would also love for us to just beat them down on both sides of the ball without the drama of the previous scenario. Either way, hoping for a win and get that Bama monkey off our backs.

Both starting safeties are now on
NFL rosters (not practice squads BTW)Gardner is a AA at CB at probable top 10-15 pick.Their other CB (Shepard) is also very good and probable draft pick.

In short, they were better in their
defensive backfield last year but better and more expirenced in their from 7 this year...especially DL.

We now know we played that game with a damaged QB. Had we subbed Bennett in the 2nd half we might have won by 20.

Dawgs struggled the first game of the season, without many of our best offensive weapons. It happens. Since then they've been very steady vs 8 SEC defenses.

IMHO you can throw out the first game stats of any team in any season, especially given UGA's injuries. Most of those players are back and the Dawgs are stronger than ever on offense.

Hale's a journalist so he has to write something. Dawgs can lose, or struggle on offense, but I don't think they will. Monken is going to put the offense in the best position(s) to be successful, and the defense will help with field position.
