BVG just announced as the DC at Gulf Shores High School. Mark Hudspeth is the new HC there.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

He had his best years at Georgia.

2002-2004 defenses were fun to watch.

15 different jobs since 2000
Gotta be some type of record in the FB coaching world.

yep, kinda crazy considering his resume.
I don't care if the style of play was much different than it is now; if you're a DC in the SEC for 4 years and only give up 30 points one single time (to the national champs at that), that's elite in my book.

He was his own worst enemy.

Won't speak Ill of him, his defenses were our best in a generation. Best wishes to him.

Agreed, I wish he had stayed and continued that fire that we had on defense. When he left, Willie tried to step in and be the hard arse but he just couldn't pull it off the same way after being the nice guy for so long.

I think willie was lazy more than anything and bvg was a preparation freak with a hard-nosed approach.
Heck we would have t targets game under current rules but it was a bad arse thing to witness at the time.
I do think the DC from OU we had also could have been a good one with more time but he couldn't stop tech.

Sure but he had some generational talent to work with.

Van gorder wasnt special. There wasnt anything extraordinary.
He was able to do something that creates dominant defenses. He controlled the line of scrimmage with his front 4. As has been mentioned, he had some pretty good personnel to work with.
Take away that dominant front 4, and you get Willie's defenses. You get Van Gorder at every other stop.
There was nothing schematically special about him.

Could be but it had been since Erk that we looked like that on d. Give the devil his due, he got it done when many others had not.

If Pollack wasn't on those teams, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun to watch tbh.

I can give him credit for coaching up very talented players. Absolutely.
But he wasnt an Xs and Os coach. He wasnt smarter than opposing OCs. His gameplan is the type of gameplan that beats great QBs (drew brees, russell wilson, aaron rogers). The problem is that it is personnel driven and not gameplan driven (front 4 beating 5-6 blockers like a drum).
Everyone in the NFL knows what it takes to negate elite QB play. But how often does it really happen?

He's made a lot of money in his career, this sounds like a retirement hobby. No big money but also no 14 hour days. Stay involved with a sport you are passionate about and work with kids, live on the coast. 61 years young.

Two things that really impressed me about BVG
1. His defenses always played better in the second half. Great adjustments and intensity.
2. He saw Thomas Davis, a football unknown, playing BASKETBALL and called Richt and said we needed to recruit that kid.

There's some truth in that but the bigger issue was Martinez trying to assume the tough guy roll and the players not respecting that. I heard that from several people attached to the program at that time.

-pollack was a 2* fullback coming into UGA. Played DT in 01 before moving to DE full time
-thomas davis was a 2* that was only recruited after a basketball game
-Tim Jennings' was a 2* whose only other scholarship offer was like south carolina state or something
-sean jones was recruited as a QB/athlete
We obviously had some good players but you have to give massive credit to the coaches too. The recruiting profiles of those 02-04 defenses would be laughed at by the recruiting hauls of today but the big name teams, us included.
