pollack was a 2* fullback coming into UGA. Played DT in 01 before moving to DE full time
Can we just stop with this narrative once and for all?
Pollack was a 3 star and the Defensive Lineman of the Year in GA and recruited by all the big boys including Ohio State,Florida,Auburn,Clemson,Bama, etc.
quote:
We obviously had some good players but you have to give massive credit to the coaches too. The recruiting profiles of those 02-04 defenses would be laughed at by the recruiting hauls of today but the big name teams, us included.
Look at the defensive talent we had in our starting lineup in '01 alone :
Charles Grant 1st Rd
Jonathan Sullivan 1st RD
Boss Bailey 2nd Rd
Josh Mallard 6 yr NFL career
Tony Gilbert 8 yr NFL career
Will Witherspoon 10 yr NFL career
Jermaine Phillips 7 yr NFL career
Donnan arguably recruited one of the best classes in the nation in '98 and had very solid '99 class.
ETA I'll give BVG credit for getting
his defenses prepared and playing at
max effort but lets not act like the cupboard was bare and he was some type of defensive wizard and great at 2nd half "adjustments."

Re: Jermaine Phillips
I remember he came in as a 'partial qualifier'. Donnan had to fight to get him here. I don't think we took partial qualifiers before that.
One Goff year ('88?) we were opening at LSU and like a couple of hours before the bus left we found out a bunch a starters weren't eligible.
People always wondered why uga wasn't even better in football. It was stuff like this. Add to that the stupid substance abuse policy, local cop gestapo, and the tight purse strings / constantly lagging facility issues and there you have it.
Donnan and Richt each had to fight battles to bring us closer to where we are now in terms of being 'ALL IN'.
