Thoughts on the Kelly hire?

tRant is having multiple orgasms from LSU fans over it.

I mean it's a decent hire but there are glaring issues and concerns. Kelly is a very good coach for sure. He has done well at ND and made them a consistent winner. That said he has generally been terrible in big games outside of beating Clemson last year when half their team was out. He's generally disliked and a horrific culture fit with LSU as an aloof Yankee.

Sounds like they are paying him beyond stupid money, millions more than Saban.

Once again I think he's a good coach and it's a decent hire but Kelly isn't even in the Top 5 guys I worried about.

I don't see the fit. This is like Tom Landry coaching the Redskins. It doesn't make sense

Notre Dame should have fired his arse when he killed that kid.

Any claim that this was their guy is a complete lie. This is a dream for us. Would rather have this than them have Aranda.

His personality does not match what LSU is. He'll still recruit LA well like they always have, but I think it will hurt their ability to pull from out of state.

Hasn't been a big game winner.

If he had the same records at LSU that he had at ND, he would have been fired after his 5th season (8-5 three out of five years).

Kelly is a better hire than I expected after Riley went with USC. Very solid hire. Kelly reminds me a lot of Jimbo really.

Builds from the lines on out.

Runs an old school pro style offense and doesn't always have the QB to pull it off.

Stubborn as hell. But doesn't call plays, which is a plus.

I think Jimbo is a better recruiter, but Kelly will recruit really well at LSU.

Jimbo can chew on some arse, but he is not in Kelly's tier as an arse chewer. Best/worst arse chewer in the country.

I know many are down on Jimbo right now but I doubt most still are by next August.

Notre Dame and their fans were patient with Kelly, and he’s been very good the last few seasons but has gotten blown out in meaningful games.

I’m not sure that will go down as well in Baton Rouge.

I suppose that's all possible but I really think the cultural issue is a timebomb. LSU has had a run of guys that really fit well and Kelly just doesn't. His style is very different than the traditional LSU style that is highly emotional and plays with attitude. He's as different than Coach O as possible and that cuts both ways. Very few guys that loved O will love Kelly so it's going to be a major rebuild. I don't know how well he will play in SEC/Louisiana living rooms either.

Considering the options I am more than okay with it

Lane, Riley, and Napier all would have greatly improved the offense
Aranda, Stoops, Campbell would have greatly improved the defense and toughness

For all their complaints about Fisher's offense, they are going to HATE Kelly's. It's as bad as watching paint dry. And he's not remotely in the same zip code of a recruiter as Orgeron.

In summary, not too bad for the rest of the SEC West

Fisher is looking like a BARGAIN compared to these contracts

It is indicative of all that is wrong with college sports.

1. Money is just ridiculous.

2. No real contracts to speak of. Agents are running the show.

3. Its all just free agency. Thanks for that, Catfish Hunter! (yep, I'm old)

CFB coaches are on the same trustworthiness level as politicians, lawyers, and realtors. They used to be men that boys looked up to for pride and work ethic. Now they are teaching lessons in economics and unethical dodging ("I'm committed...all in...not going to LSU" etc.)

Unfortunately, boys still look up to them, and that is what they see.

It's just a broken model. Who the hell wouldn't take a job for 100mm+?

At the end of the day, there should be real contracts to stop at least a small part if the insanity. (which I do recognize would require the services of one of the miscreants from my list above, but it is a necessary evil that they created for us.)

It’s a solid hire. There’s a lot of similarities between Kelly and Jimbo IMO

Solid hire. Could turn out to be a great hire if he can recruit in Louisiana. Cultural fit for recruiting at LSU is my only question.

Ed O is better for LSU than Kelly. Kelly hire smacks of Fran - he becomes the third-oldest coach in the SEC (Saban, Leach) and gets FU money. Wasn’t a lights out recruiter with the biggest brand in college sports. As previously pointed out - a terrible cultural fit in South Louisiana.

Lsu fired their last two NC winning coaches for having a down year - love affair with Kelly will be short lived.

I think it’s a solid, but not exceptional hire. Woodward clearly missed on his early targets (there’s talk on texags Fisher turned down 13 mil a year for 8 years?!?) but he could’ve done worse than Kelly. If I was an LSU fan I would’ve wanted Aranda back from Baylor.

I think it’s ironic because LSU fans have downplayed Fisher ever since we hired him in that he’s just cruising in retirement and too old to matter anymore, well Kelly is even older and moving from an established school, so very similar situations.

I will state for the record I never was worried about a Lincoln Reily hire if that was who it was going to be. Guy took over a built up program from stoops and picked on a weak big 12 that had the other biggest team (sips) stumbling around for a decade. Anytime he got to the playoff he lost. And sounds like he knew it would be way harder too with ou moving to the SEC so he tucked tail and ran. So Kelly is probably a better hire for them than Reily would’ve been, just my opinion.

Unusual hire, for sure. Kelly is relatively pretty old for a new hire and, idk, he's just always had a really uninspiring personality. I don't know if he's cut out for the amount of work needed in the SEC. He has been good at Notre Dame but that's a completely different environment

Yea i think so too. Kelly’s system may be a tad more “modern” with some of the concepts. I like that he has a system with coordinators who call plays within the system

As for the “fit” thing keep in mind we are in need of a cultural reboot. Our culture graduated/went pro in ‘19. Kelly is a guy who can build a strong culture and hopefully land some thicc midwestern baws for our OL classes. We’ve also seen Saban who 20 years ago wasn’t really a culture fit down here have wild success. You’ve got to be a walking computer not to slot in in south Louisiana. Even Aranda is a cyborg but he and his family fit right in.

I wanted Aranda and was one of the few really high on Campbell but im satisfied. Now excited to see how the staff will look. Raymond and Faulk supposedly staying.
