We'll never be as good as we could be with good coaching, but as with 2015-2016 it will be incredibly difficult to keep this team out of the second weekend of the tournament. There's just too much talent and the SEC conference schedule gives good teams 5-6 auto-wins a year. Kennedy for all his Xs and Os faults has recruited relatively well.

Though I will admit we were shockingly bad last year relative to our talent, so anything is possible.

Nice pickup. We need to land another big-time big this class.

The facts are there aren't a ton of good X's and O's coaches in college hoops. Watch major conference games, watch conference tournaments, the big tournament. There just aren't. I'm not saying that to defend Kennedy necessarily because we've definitely had some disappointing years relative to our talent, but those types of guys just aren't out there. That's just my opinion and some may disagree

You're absolutely correct. I think that's been a bigger bane to college basketball than anything to do with 1 and done players.

I don't know why it is because I agree it doesn't have a ton to do with one and done guys. They haven't helped at some schools, but I feel like you used to see the good mid majors from the Missouri Valley A-10 or MAC running fundamental set offenses. I feel like I don't see that anymore aside from a few exceptions. Everyone runs some drive and kick type offense it seems like, maybe AAU ball where that seems to be prevalent is to blame

The other side is if we ever got some coaching whiz it's likely he may not be around very long. We aren't at the top of totem pole hoops wise

Question regarding the SEC/Big 12 Challenge:

If we finished 9th last year in the SEC, why are we playing Kansas in the challenge? Shouldn't Florida play Kansas? I get why Kentucky wouldn't play them since they are already playing them this month. I thought the matchups were based on your record from the previous year. Guess not.

I don't think they're based on that. I'm sure preseason expectations factor into it somewhat. I don't know why we are but sure glad it's who we drew. It's great for RPI/SOS

I know it's been said in here but our OOC schedule is fricking legit this year

this is what concerns me. it's easy to point to not having a guard, but who's fault is that Billy?! but to be fair he's made up for it this year with the guards to choose from. either way, not making the post-season last year was pretty shameful.

Never fully understood how they pull it up but I'm pretty sure it's something the schools and conferences work out themselves. I thought I read somehwere on texags that we got Kansas because we were working with the conference on some other matter....but I don't remember what exactly

Basically it seems like politics and shite come into play. They do take into account how good you are, but a its worked out between the conferences

Basketball rosters are a lot harder to manage than football, there’s just no room to have that next man up mentality. JJ being declared ineligible was a big unexpected hit, especially in a year we lost FOUR starters, which everyone keeps conveniently ignoring.

I’m still surprised at how well we did out of conference with only 7 players and that we did decent with only 6 in conference play.

Let’s put that in a bit more perspective: on the 2017 Golden State Warriors, a team that everyone bitched about as being too star heavy, Klay Thompson had the highest on court percentage on the team, which was only 70.8%. Gilder played at least 98% of 15 straight games, with 100% in 10 of those.

Even LeBron needs a rest. A combination of losing a huge chunk of the roster, an ok recruiting year, and the ineligibles caused a pause in trajectory, that’s all there is to it. Any talk of underperforming with the talent we had on the team is flat out ignorant. Our ability to not make up for it with more transfers might be valid.

was he though? from what i remember it was known in advance that he was potentially going to be ineligible. how far in advance i don't remember.

even if he was ruled eligible, he would have been a true freshman, and while that doesn't mean the same thing for basketball as it does for a more physical sport like football, it's still a lot of expectation/responsibility to place on a first year player.

my issue is that he should have made sure to stagger his recruiting so that we weren't going to be relying on graduate transfers to fill the role, or done a better job of holding onto the point guards he had recruited, for example alex robinson the kid that transfered to tcu. he would have helped a lot last year in the PG spot. to not have the foresight to see a potential huge hole in a position as important as PG seems negligent.

JC Hampton transfered in, the transfers out did hurt depth though (Avery Johnson Jr included), which I think is why you saw us bring in Wilson this year even though we already had 2 PG on the roster.

ETA: Thank you for the reasonable, logical response. The baseless, nonsensical whining on here is getting on my last nerve.

according to sandhop, we were supposed to get a home game in the challenge but when the league told kennedy we would be going on the road, he specifically requested KU. Self said okay. the way i understand it, theres a little negotiation between the schools about the potential matchup but its ultimately the league offices' decision, which is influenced heavily by ESPN.

the entire reason he went the homeschool route was so that he could qualify, so the staff at least had an inkling of his academic issues. according to "longhornsno1" on texags (who is pretty connected in houston HS BB), one of our previous assistants (stansbury or keller) completely dropped the ball on getting JJ admitted.

And first year player or not, think of how many games we lost last year where we had 20+ TOs. I specifically remember losing leads to MSU and USCw and USCe. collins couldnt even get the ball across mid court against west virginia. I dont think its a stretch to say we would have been a bubble team with him.

That would make sense, given some matchups will bring in more eyeballs and more $$. I don't know why but I was always under the impression it was based on record of the previous year.

Either way I'm excited. Anyone gonna road trip?
