It wasn't losing to t.u. and OU that sealed Slocum's fate

It was going 1-3 vs. Texas Tech over his last four years.

In that same vein, it won't be Sumlin's 1-9 record against Alabama and LSU that gets him fired, but rather his 1-5 record against the state of Mississippi post-Manziel.

What seals our fate is the fact that the corps have done decades of weird shite that is now entrenched in our culture and brand which makes it almost impossible to recruit at a high enough level to complete throughout an entire season in the SEC.

Firing Sumlin won't fix it. Nothing will.

After our 2012 season we peaked in recruiting at a #6 class. That is our glass ceiling.

Actually it might be both, CGSC.

The fan base and big money have done their part and they are demanding a return on the investment. Now that it's being pissed away, excuses are not going to be acceptable. 1-9 vs Alabama and LSU is unacceptable. 1-5 vs. State of Mississippi isn't going to cut it. Padding the win column vs the Prairie View's of the world will not cut it.

Last night may very well be Sumlin's version of Iowa State in 2005. He'll get a little more time, but the vultures are now circling.

What sucks is this is our upcycle.

Texas couldn't be more down.

I mean, I know it's cool to take jabs at the state of Mississippi, but we are 24-12 in our last 36 contests.

Y'all and State are 23-13.

It isn't losing to Mississippi schools that's gonna get Sumlin fired. Your school has a strange culture surrounding it, and a premium is seemingly placed on passiveness. I've never understood it, and I've seen it first hand.

Unless that changes, enjoy hanging with us in the standings.

Jes' sayin' tho.

Y'all are soft. Some nice folks though, but y'all would rather be the most hospitable folks ever than be a nasty football team.

Your fans are too nice. This isn't a particularly nice conference. We cheat like crazy, and lie about it. Better yet, we lie about our rivals' cheating habits to Birmingham, just ask Tennessee.

How our fans treat other people and how our football players play have zero correlation.

Our fans were extremely hospitable in the 80s and 90s and we cheated like crazy and had a team full of angry and aggressive players. You probably think you personally make a difference in whether or not Ole Miss wins though, which is cute. Good for you.

Solid assumption bro.

The mentality of your fanbase absolutely has an effect on your football team.

Until the culture changes in College Station, you'll always be a step behind. Y'all are so blinded by your insistence on all things traditional that you just won't stay in step with the rest of the conference.

Your gigantic stadium sounds like a beehive for Christ's sake. Yell the loudest way, not the "A&M" way.

shite, LSU fired the winningest coach in their program's history this September and they're gonna beat y'all like you stole something from them later this month. Don't tell me that untimely termination has nothing to do with fanbase mentality.

I really mean it. You should be proud of what you've contributed as a fan. I'll make sure to be a shitty person from here on out so we can win

So our ceiling is Top-10, fringe Top-5 program?

Slocum had had problems with Tech long before the period you cite. He lost 3 straight to Tech 95-97.

I'd suggest that Slocum's 3-8 bowl record was more instrumental in his downfall. People wondered if his great records were merely a function of a very weak SWC, because he almost always came up short at the end of the year against teams that were supposedly roughly of equal caliber. When we moved to the B12 and started looking like just a mediocre team, it solidified the thinking that he was just a mediocre coach.

But even the bowl record doesn't account for everything. The whole picture was wrong with Slocum. His bowl record sucked, he lost to Tech, and he got passed up again by UTx (particularly by Mack), going 2-5 against them in B12 play. The overall case against him was just too strong.

And unfortunately, it seems that the overall case against Sumlin is likewise too strong. I'll afford him the same courtesy I afforded Sherman, and withhold my final judgment until the season is over. But right now, we're on a trajectory of change.

The reason I used post-1998 is simple. After he won the Big 12, he was granted a 7-year GUARANTEED CONTRACT extension.

Aggie Coach records after being given guaranteed contracts

R.C. Slocum (7 year contract after 1998 season)

29-19

Dennis Franchione (6 year contract after 2004 season)

21-15

Mike Sherman (7 year guaranteed contract when initially signed)

25-25

Kevin Sumlin (6 year guaranteed contract after 2013 season)

23-13 (likely to finish 23-16)

I'm not clear on what link you're making between contract status and eventual firing. I thought we were just talking about the factors that contributed to Slocum's ouster.
