What was Lane supposed to do in OM>LSU situation? People don't think, put in his shoes

If Lane stays at Ole Miss through end of CFP, then LSU job locks up. He then is at Ole Miss through at least into the offseason and likely for another 4 years.
"It's the way Kiffin left..." is such a cop out line used by all the media.
Bama is locked up
UGA is locked up
LSU is locked up
Texas is locked up
TAMU is locked up
Notre Dame locked up
Tenn locked up
Oregon is locked up
Florida already went with Sumrall November 30th, they also wouldn't have waited into end of January 2026. And Ole Miss AD made it very ambiguous that you can't stay until end of CFP, then leave right after.. so does that mean he can't leave until the next season? or that he just can't accept an offer in November while coaching OM in CFP, but can accept an offer after the CFP ends?
The only programs that he might leave for going into the next year's offseason are Clemson and Florida St. He doesn't know if Clemson or Florida St wants them nor if they will pay the $55 million buyout for each respective coach, as well as Kiffin might not think it's a step up to go to Clemson or FSU.
Essentially in the moment, Kiffin had to decide between LSU or Ole Miss for the next 4 to 5 years.
Not one single media member has acknowledged what the full, laid out consequences are for denying LSU. This is reality. Details matter.
It's a whole lot easier to judge than it is to think in depth, isn't it.

Coaches get fired very quickly... This is a stupid take

Lane did nothing wrong. It was Ole Miss that fricked up for not letting him coach through the playoffs.

Honestly, I thought he could have easily coasted those next few years at OM relatively drama free and probably ended up in a much better position to get offered another NFL gig again. Dude was what, 31 when he was hired by the raiders and it was a bit of a disaster back then. But dude is chaotic at heart and will always be true to himself and want an ego boost eventually.

It’s < 7 hours until kickoff.

Go and not whine like a baby when they tell you you can't coach the playoff team. Pretty simple.

Ole Miss is mad that he left. Period. That’s what he did wrong. And the national media and SEC fans picked up on their outrage and piled on without thinking. Just like with the other criticisms of Lane.
It was either stay at Ole Miss forever or leave when he did. He fought to coach the team through the Playoffs and try to win a championship. Ole Miss said no. We loaned them Weiss, Jr. for the Playoffs to give Ole Miss the best chance. It wasn’t enough to overcome Golding’s defensive problems as Ole Miss couldn’t stop Miami at the end.
So, Ole Miss is mad.

The argument is about him taking coaches and players. Lane took 4 players and 10+/- staff. It sucks, but this typical and maybe on the low end for number of players.
John Sumrall took less coaches and less players, but the gripe is that Lane took any at all.

It’s mainly because the LSU coaching search media circus was insane and Lane just kind of sopped it up and basked in the attention instead of cutting clean. It wasn’t fair to his players. They had every reason and right to feel a sense of betrayal from that, cmon. And of course the fans are going to feel that, too. LSU fans pretending they wouldn’t have been pissed in that situation is crazy.

Lane’s career.
1 season as a low level NFL role
1.5 seasons as an NFL head coach
2 decades in CFB. Hasn’t been linked to an NFL team since the Al Davis disaster. Who by the way has had 1 winning season since they fired him.
Is this your way of coping with a coach that will never sniff the CFB championship?

I agree. Kinda like CBK at LSU which started the whole thing.

When has Lane won a title?

ole miss rolled out red carpet for lane to leave by insisting that he make a decision immediately following the egg bowl. It would have been better and the weight of the world would’ve fallen on Lane if Ole Miss would’ve simply left the decision to leave entirely to Lane without an ultimatum.
If Lane would’ve stayed to coach the playoffs without clearly announcing his long-term intentions I do not think LSU would have waited for him to make the decision and would have moved on. If lanes intention to leave ever became clear to Ole Miss, then Ole Miss could have cut him loose immediately. Not much risk to Ole Miss since Golding was always the backup plan.
Some would argue against this approach because it would’ve given Lane more time to do damage to the Ole Miss program if he stayed to coach the playoffs and had already decided to go to LSU. But like I said above, I do not think LSU would’ve waited on him. I think the risk would’ve been worth it.
Instead Lane used that ultimatum as a crutch to leave when he did and did his best to look like the good guy by begging to stay and coach the playoffs and ended up partially achieving that goal by loaning Charlie Wei’s back to Ole Miss for the playoffs.
The other issue was ole miss pandered to lane to much. Lane is the type of shrew that does not want to be adored by his team‘s fans. He wants them to expect without exception to win a national championship every year and that they should be royally pissed and nasty if he does not deliver that each year. Most Ole Miss fans don’t think in those terms (because of years of conditioning to the contrary)so it was not a good fit for Lane’s personality.
To go along with the advantage that LSU fans possess the preferred attitude, LSU also enjoys significant advantages in facilities, recruiting and monetary resources.
None of this is hard to understand.
Ole Miss made substantial strides across the board to relevancy during Lane’s tenure, and has the opportunity to keep the momentum going with the right coach. So the realquestion now is if Golding is the right man to do it? Win or lose I think today’s game will start to answer that question.

It was convenient for LSU to lob that that ball over into OM's court and let them be the a-hole but they knew OM had to say no. I'm highly skeptical that LSU would have actually allowed it.

He’s supposed to do whatever he wants in any and every decision he makes. He’s a grown arse man.

You shouldn't be looking for other jobs in the middle of a NC run to start with really.
And you definitely shouldn't make it a distraction for your entire team week after week because you crave the attention and want to feel like HS player getting recruited and read about yourself and how everyone wants you in the media.
To some degree Ole Miss fans were going to hate Kiffin no matter what. I'm still like frick Coach Fran, and that happened over 20 years ago, and he didn't leave in the middle of a NC run, or do any of the rest. But it's not like I wish the guy ill will in general or anything, just on the football field.
Kiffin brings drama everywhere he goes. Saban rehabbed his image by making him shut up.
What he should have done was say - I'm in the middle of a NC run with a great school and team. I will not entertain any offers about the future until the season is over. And then coached until the year.
If LSU thought he was worth it, they could wait. If Kiffin is as good as claimed, Ole Miss would have went as far or further than they did with him as coach, his stock and value would go up, not down.
But instead, Kiffin left early in order to get a head start on the recruiting and such for the following year. And I don't blame Ole Miss for doing what they did. Saban fired his arse for similar reasons when he was hired by FAU. He wasn't doing his duties and was more focused on FAU.
You might could also say that given the fact it's Kiffin, it couldn't have happened any other way and should have been expected.

That's not grown arse man behavior, that's punk behavior.
Grown arse men have responsibilities to people and things other than themselves.
