Worst coach firing: Whom did you fire that then had success somewhere else?

Might as well add another “coaching changes” topic.
All these best and worst hiring discussions got me to thinking.
Whom did your school fire who then went on to have reasonable success somewhere else?
In other words, you failed more than he did?
Can’t really think of anybody like that for us, at least not recently. Wondering if anybody else does have one.

Damn, sooo close for me and my fellow LSU fans.

I know Florida did not fire Meyer but he left there and had great success at Ohio State.

Gene Stallings became a perennial 10-win coach and led Alabama to a natty.

Good catch. I looked as far back as Bellard, but stopped one coach too soon.

Dan Devine resigned from Missouri.
He was our AD and football coach and resigned after he had his first losing season with us and went to coach the Packers.
I am not old enough to remember but I have heard people say it is 100% Missouri's fault and that Devine resigned due to his pretty reasonable demands not being met.
Missouri tapped him for AD when Faurot left or retired or whatever I guess because that's how they did things back then, football coaches weren't as specialized yet. And Devine was an extremely competent administrator besides that. He was the Packers GM while he coached there and while he was Missouri's AD he hired Norm Stewart as BB coach.
However coaches moving to doing only football the way things were moving with tje game picking up in popularity. Missouri was already paying him a lot which they justifed by having him work the 2 jobs but after his losing season Devine felt he couldn't do both jobs and still coach effectively and he wanted to focus on being a football coach.
Missouri didn't quite feel enough of the same way so he resigned.
Probably cursed as a university. Just a few bucks away from having a football dynasty.

I don't think Alabama has any, not in my lifetime anyway.
Bryant - retired
Perkins - left for the NFL where he had a losing record, but was about to be fired anyway.
Curry - left for Kentucky, but would have been fired.
Stallings - retired
DeBose - fired, never did shite after.
Fran - left for A&M, but still shite the bed anyway.
Shula - wasn't really a HC to start with, hasn't been since.
Saban - retired

Not a head coach but Fulmer hired Dave Clawson in 2008 to be our OC. It was an ugly year and the true begging of our dark age. Had our administration kept Fulmer and Clawson we’d probably have gotten good again. At least to the point of respectability

Can't think of anyone for AU.

I am old enough to remember Devine leaving. My Dad was furious, said the bean counters ran him off.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Alabama (especially after Bear Bryant retired) is that they fire a lot of coaches. Going back to the Wallace Wade Era, I think Alabama has only fired like 4 or 5 head coaches in its history.

I dont think this would have worked either. I dont think Fulmer ever trusted anyone except Cutcliffe and Chavis enough to not mire whoever they hired's career with some half arse version of their ideas with enough fulmer sprinkled in to make it not work.

Ken Hatfield.
They didn't fire him but ran him off to Clemson where he won an ACC title and after won a SWC title at Rice of all places.

quote:Coach O. But he never would have had the success at Ole Miss as he did at LSU because Joe Burrow never would have come to Ole Miss.

One of those great mysteries: what would Mizzou have been had Dan Devine stuck around as football coach.
Posted on 9/3/24 at 4:17 pm to Miznoz
My Dad went to Mizzou during Devine years and said it was awesome and that it was sad when he resigned and everyone had hoped Devine would be the coach to lock down KC and STL metro area recruiting. Looking like Drink may be that second chance in terms of recruiting. Time will tell with coaching because he’s so new but he did everything right last year.

Cutcliffe and O but there were different, and justified reasons for them being let go.
Cutcliffe refused to fire weak points in the staff and didn’t like to recruit. When he was told to make changes, he said no and was fired.
Coach O by his own admission says he tried to do too much while he was at Ole Miss. The players loved him but he worked them to the point it was detrimental. He had the team doing full pad scrimmages the day before games.
One thing I will never call him though is lazy or unmotivated. That dude wanted to win more than anyone and worked his arse off. He was just bad at delegation and not resting players appropriately

Ed Orgeron got fired at Ole Miss then went to LSU and coached the GOAT team then got fired at LSU and became successful at railing middle aged divorcees in Destin all day every day
