When was the last time you saw a team run a wishbone, as in not the Paul Johnson triple but a true wishbone either from under center or in the shotgun? I remember Oregon has a wishbone-esq formation out of the shotgun under Chip Kelly but I don’t remember any major program having even a wishbone formation. Last time I saw it used was when I played little league and my team a true wishbone. I know Auburn used to run it back in the 80’s.

Duke ran it (triple option) for a series against Alabama in the 2019 opener.

Aside from the military academies, I remember Oregon State using it pretty unsuccessfully in the 1990s.

Did the military academies ever run a true wishbone or have they always run the option out of the wing like they do now?

Honestly surprised Gus hasn’t tried to implement a true triple option formation in some way against the gumps. It would be a massive failure against any other team but I’m sure we’d rush for like 500 yards against y’all if we used it.

Arkansas last ran it in the late 80s under Ken Hatfield.

Arkansas should’ve ran it in the mid-2000’s with McFadden, Jones, and Hillis

If it was an Iron Bowl inside that accursed Jordan Hare stadium and y’all had a Nick Marshall like dude at QB, yea Auburn would run for five hundred yards using that kind of offense you described. I’ll concede your point.

Army when they stomped Northwestern. It was a while back, the coach before their current coach, but they went pure Wishbone against Northwestern in the second half and the Wildcats had no idea how to stop it.

It wasn't the pitch outs on a triple option that screwed them up. It was the constant inside traps, counters, and iso leads. Northwestern had prepared for the flexbone/wingbone offense Army ran but they had no idea how to stop this.

Would it work every game? Probably not. Army unleashed a Pistol/flexbone midline read option against Air Force a couple of years ago and caught the Falcons completely flat footed. Army won, going away, and did not attempt a single pass in the game.

What a weapon right? Yeah, teams had solved it by the start of the next season Army only runs it every now and then.

Marist HS in metro ATL has been running it
it since the mid 70's and has always been
a consistent power.

Side note:Sean Mcvay (Rams HC) was their QB in 2004 and was the 4A POY

Alabama actually ran one play out of the wishbone formation against Auburn in 2004. That was pretty cool to see.

Coach Chadwick has been there since the 80s. And you are right. They are a consistent powerhouse despite being undersized.

Gran has run some wishbone the past couple of seasons (between Wilson and Bowden). But even with Bowden under center didn't go full wishbone.

Ken Hatfield ran it at Clemson and Rice after. Even in his last year at Rice (2005) he was in it a good amount of time. He used other variations of formations for the triple option, but he still had the base wishbone as a major part of his offense.

It's why his career ended up with him being fired from Rice.

1985 Oklahoma was the last national champion to run the Wishbone. They were still very strong up until Barry Switzer left following the 1988 season. That’s when the Wishbone died at the elite level of college football.

Mitch Mustain was slow and not a great decision maker. If those three had been there at the same time as Matt Jones, then yeah absolutely.
