An AU friend offered this explanation back in the summer.... Very interesting opinion on Tubbs departure.
The 2008 class hurt AU pretty bad. They signed 11 guys who had no other SEC offers, 2 more whose only other SEC offer was Miss St., and another whose only SEC offer was Kentucky. Add to that many of the top players in that class (Raven Gray, Jermaine Johnson, Andre Wadley, Freddie Smooth, Jomarcus Savage, C Thompson, M Jemison, D Barnes) never made it into school or left before seeing significant playing time and you have a big reason for the lack of depth.
The 2007 class shows that 14 of those signees are no longer with the team and 2 more (Freeman and Fairley) are just now starting their first year at AU. Injuries, grades, people getting kicked off team, leaving early...
The addition of Saban putting the smack down on in-state recruting added fuel to the fire. It's hard to have decent LB depth when all the kids AU used to get are at Bama now. A lot of AU fans can't or won't accept that. They say it was the BBQ boys fault.
Tubbs' last "great class" (2007) has simply not worked out, except OL. The 2008 Class has had 50% attrition so far.
This year’s class already has a 25% attrition rate after only 6 months. 3 of the 6 that failed to qualify were committed before the current staff took over. The downward trend would have only continued under Tuberville.
AU has depth issues all over the field. RB, TE and QB seem to be in the best shape as far as experienced depth. Then DL is right there behind those two. Rocker has had to play musical chairs with the DL to make depth, but it seems he has accomplished that. Anytime you rely on freshman...WR/DB/LB, then those will be areas of concern. Depth is not just about numbers, it is also about experience and most importantly, talent.
Schools can sign 25 a year with an 85 max........NO EXCUSE to be less than 85 UNLESS YOU ARE ON PROBATION. Saban had to get rid of 15 in his 3rd year to get down to 85.
LSU, Bama, UGA, and UF were getting whoever they wanted. xCTT was often left offering Plan B, C, and D guys. Then, to try and keep up talentwise, xCTT was forced to offer a lot of talented athletes who were very iffy academically. These were talented players that the other schools passed on because they had recruits just as talented but without the grade issues. Since '07 it seems AU has had very few of their biggest name recruits make it in on their first try.
There is no doubt that Tubbs is a good coach. But, I think by the end of last year, the AU PTB saw that Tubbs best wasn't going be good enough anymore. And, rather than continue on with the status-quo, they felt they had to make a change for the program, good or bad, something had to be done.

quote:I'm afraid that Chizik doesn't equal Saban, and for that matter Tubby does'nt equal Shula. So very bad comparison. Shula was way worse than Tubby and Saban is way better than Chizik so Bama went from a mediocre to bad coach to a great coach. Auburn went from a good and sometimes great coach to a huge question mark in Chizik. It really is baffling.
Why was Shula fired and Saban hired?

Thanks. I think it's just ridiculous to say CTT gave up on Auburn and lost his "fire" for coaching. He is a great coach, he's proven it on many occasions. The environment in the state changed dramatically in a short period of time & CTT got caught in transition (Franklin). The AU PTB saw first hand what was happening and had to weigh their options. They made a decision to let CTT make his own internal changes on his staff. He was loyal to a fault and balked at firing the whole offensive staff. Can you blame him? After all, these were the same guys that helped AU get to an undefeated season in 2004, beat Bama 6 in a row, and beat Florida, LSU, Tennessee and many other top 5 teams on a regular basis.

I do however think it's telling that some of that same staff (including Nall and Ensminger) are in non-college football jobs now. I think it says something that no other programs sought them out.

True. Could be that Tubbs was just blinded by his loyalty to them. Maybe he thought since they'd all "been there & don't that" before, they could just do it all again.... Who knows.

tubbys loyalty to his assistants were what sealed his fate....but while at auburn i dont think anybody can deny his success....auburn was a threat to win every ball game....i think his tenure would have been cut way shorter if he had not dominated alabama on a regular basis

When Tuberville got to AU there weren't that many great coaches in the SEC. That changed, with Saban being the nail in his coffin. Richt at UGA, MEYER at UF, Fulmer getting taken down at UT, etc. Tubby hadn't recruited well at AU for several years, and it's showing now, and it wasn't going to get any better unless Lowder pulled the plug.

Dear god I don't know where to start with this retarded crap.
Yes you are correct the last class Tubs recruited had major issues. The problem was Tubs rarely went after top recruits, think I'm kidding go back and look top talent Tubs rarely went after. The big thing Tubs did was go through 4-6 thousand other recruits to make sure all of the talent on the team was even. Most teams starting team was solid then you have a drop off to the second string. Tub's goal for AU was to have no drop off to have a consistent team, and he did for years.
The last few years we had major issues with clearinghouse to the point I started to believe there were people actively trying to hurt AU there. People would get confirmed very very late for no reason and so on. This changed somewhat with Chizik so I'm not sure what is going on but some of that seems to have cleared up.
AU has NEVER gotten most of the talent in state so Saban taking all the top athletes was normal and expected. The problem was that with the change in offensive philosophy other teams picked off some of AU's recruits. Eric Smith was lied to by Nutt about him sitting on the bench etc...
Tubs was given the chance to clean up his offensive staff, specifically Greg Knox, Nall, and a new OC. Tubs valued Nall and somewhat Knox and felt he wouldn't be fired. He over judged himself or just felt it was a time for a change we will likely never know if he didn't want to give them up or if he hide behind them wanting to be fired.
Offensively AU's offense has gone down hill since 2005 where we had a strong offense. Defensively we've been consistent, until last year we were the second most consistent team on defense in all of college football, ranked higher than LSU, USC, and all teams except VT who was ranked higher. Offensively Tub's offenses have underperformed. The average offensive ranking under Tubs was 86th, if that doesn't tell you something needs to change then I don't know what does.
Tubs is a great coach I'm glad he coached at AU. He represented the University well and the program. He took a program that was on the way down after Tater Tot left and brought it back. I wish him well but it was pretty obvious it was time for a change.
The list of why Tubs should go is very very long, while there is a list of reasons to keep him it just wasn't as long.

In the state of Alabama, you get fired for one bad season. They expect to win every year.

Tuberville did lose his fire...In one year Saban recruited enough talent to level the playing field with Auburn...this should have never been the case. It should have took Saban 3+ years to even things out...especially with all of the probation they were coming off of...Tuberville got lazy...I don't hate him...I didn't really want him to get fired...but the truth is very visible...
Posted on 9/18/09 at 3:28 pm to RT1941
that's a bunch of crap, IMO... had Tubervile stayed in Auburn, we would be at or near the 85 number right now.
This had little to nothing to do with Alabama and Saban.... 2008 was the culmination of things that began well before Nick Saban ever thought about stepping foot in Tuscaloosa.
That reads like a dumbass blog post from Ricky... or whatever the fat guy from PC who writes on the bleacher report.

They were also the same guys that had the talent of that 2004 team and turned in the colossal shite-fest that was the 2003 season.
Tuberville did good things at Auburn, his time just came to an end. I dont think anyone regrets him being the HC for those 10 years, but it was also blatantly obvious a change had to be made.
The change in scope in the SEC played a part in it, as did Saban's arrival to a certain degree. Saban's arrival if anything just sped up the time frame of Tuberville's tenure coming to an end, but to state that that was the reason he was fired or that we were "terrified" of Saban is laughable. If that were the case (ie: they "panicked" and were afraid of Saban) then they would have hired a significantly bigger name than Chizik (who was obviously a huge PR-bombshell at the time).
