Because the media sites hoping for clicks and internet rumors on boards like this said he was?

Lanning was said to be Alabama’s No. 1 target after Saban announced his retirement. However, the two sides do not appear to have ever talked

Recent podcast with Lanning not sure why rival fans finds it so important for him to be.

Lanning is a good coach and I would have been ok with him but why is it stupid to go after the guy he couldn't beat and who made it to the natty while Lanning watched the playoffs on tv? Just because he came from Georgia doesn't mean Lanning is better than Deboer.

It isn't stupid at all if you couldn't get Lanning. I said I would go after him before Sark, Lane, Norvell, etc.

Reasons why Lanning was the best candidate:

1. He can recruit. You would know this. You don't really know this about DeBoer and while Saban's rebuilding Bama into a power will make it a name in recruiting, the recruiting rank of classes pulled in by Bama from 2002-2006 ranked on average well outside of the top ten. There is no given that the name Alabama will pull in a top ten class on its own.

2. He's won 22 games in his first two years of coaching. While many may think winning at Oregon is easy, you have to go back to Chip Kelly to find someone who has done it better. He's been better than the 3 coaches preceding him and he's never had any head coaching experience at all before taking on the job.

3. Lanning's first two years at Oregon as a new coach are just as impressive, if not more so, than DeBoer at Sioux Falls. If guys who won big at those lower levels were no doubt great coaches, you would see more of them hired and promoted to big schools. DeBoer and Kelly are outliers in guys who won at those levels and worked their way up to success at the FCS P5 level. Leipold also has done well, but there are a lot of them who have been promoted that didn't fair as well with the promotion.

Lanning has never won a conference title, never made the CFP and never beat Kalen DeBoer.

What a stupid fricking comment to make.

Given how quickly the job was filled, it's hard to believe anyone else was offered.

No one else was offered. It did work out well for Lanning though. He doesn’t have to go into the B1G with a coach that owns him.

I think a feeler may have been put out but he was never offered the job. Byrne wasnt gonna pay some stupid high buyout.

A feeler was put out by Jimmy Sexton to more than just Lanning. Sark, I'm sure, received one (notice his salary bump? ). This is common procedure when time starts to "run short" for long established coaches. It's simply an "if", would you be interested" question that would give an A.D. a jump on who to contact early on.
Also, this is an old "trick" that Sexton's used to get his "notified" clients a salary bump for years. Remember when all the talk was about Saban and Texas?...remember what took place with Saban's "deal" with Alabama shortly after that?
There has been and will be "raises" because of this and Mr. Sexton!

Lanning was never offered. It was Sexton working his magic. $30 Million buyout was never an option during NIL era. Byrne flew to Seattle Wednesday night after Saban retired. DeBoer was offered Thursday morning.

Lanning might not have been offered, but it wasn't because of anything Sexton did at the last minute. Lanning's buy out is $20 million, and it was included in the extension he signed back in the summer.

think DeBoer will do well. The thing I laugh at is talking about the last three years of Bama football as if it's terrible and that this breath of fresh air was needed to give life back to the program.

That's an insult to Saban, but also a huge weight put on DeBoer's shoulders. Again, those aren't just some random fans saying that and everybody else telling them they are stupid. Some of the most thumbs upped posts on Bama Rant and Tidefans.

I don't get the Saban hate either. Deboer will probably do fine at bama. Maybe 9 or 10 wins a yr.

How 'bout now?

Dan Lanning actually received a lucrative offer to move to Tuscaloosa, but turned it down to continue at Oregon. However, he never seriously considered it.

Dan Lanning received a phone call from Coach Saban and he has saved the recording of the message (as reported byTouchdown Alabama Magazine). Lanning reportedly had at least a $20 million buyout; however, Dan was never serious about becoming Bama's HC. LINK

False. Lanning was offered, but turned it down. Also, he never flew to Tuscaloosa, either. Read your own Touchdown Alabama Magazine to find out.

What Lanning has done is more impressive than what DeBoer had done at UW?
The last 4 years Christobal was there, he went 35-10. Oregon wasn't a 4-win team when Lanning took over, they won 10 the year before Lanning got there. Also, Lanning had 3 opportunities to prove he was better than DeBoer. He failed all three times.

This is stupid. Even for a dog fan.

Perhaps if Lanning and the Ducks could have played UW 3 times this past season, they might have won once.

Bama not paying 20 million for Dan Lanning's buyout.

Way to spin what Lanning actually said. Lanning never said he was offered the Bama job, he said he was not interested in leaving Oregon. The phone call from Coach Saban, that Lanning said he had saved on his phone, was clearly in reference to Sabans 2015 job offer.

Byrne himself stated that he was in a Seattle hotel room meeting with Deboer, hours after Saban retired. I don't know why it even matters to this board. But we have the man that we wanted

Think that’s high. Check out Kirby’s buy out. Highest in college football. Somewhere around $ 100,000,000.
