This topic offends me. Auburn got abused by Tight Ends this weekend.
It’s PSU. They’re only tight ends when they first arrive. They leave wide receivers

Yeah and Alabama's more explosive TE finally got out of the doghouse conveniently for the first big road game of the year. Billingsley only had 1 target for 1 rec, 26 yd, 1 TD though. Latu had 2 rec, 19 yards.
Hard to judge things because Alabama's defense played very poorly and Alabama had only 9 real possessions in that ball game due to it. It was Billingsley's first start but not many possessions and he still split time with Latu.

Because most college tight ends are objectively inferior route runners and pass catchers than college wide receivers. Take Ole Miss for example - why throw to Chase Rogers and Damarcus Thomas when you have Dontario Drummond and Jonathan Mingo on the outside?
It also depends on scheme, for sure. Some teams just don't utilize tight ends very much, receiving or blocking, whereas every team utilizes wide receivers in some form.

Just an observation from the NFL this weekend. With everyone using the spread, now the big sets and TE's are the "new" offense. D's and constructed to counter fast O's and can't handle big power offenses.

Now that Billingsley is back we have a nice little 1/2 with him and Latu.

I've noticed the NFL using their TEs more, too. Kelce and some others are changing the way TEs are used. It doesn't hurt he has Mahomes throwing to him.

Alabama does kinda need one or both of these TEs to step up because this WR corp doesn't seem like they can carry the passing game like the last several years.
Not that Alabama's WR corp is bad in 2021 but the standard from 2018-2020 is just not sustainable. RB and TEs going to have to be a bigger production factor in the offense.

Jack Bech is listed as a receiver but mostly plays a hybrid tight end type role.

Where as before the inneficency to exploit was having basically a big WR as your TE, I think the new inefficiency being exploited is the same guy but one that can block.
Teams adjusted to the wide tight end type by just added a LB/S hybrid, but if your TE can block then that creates a difficult choice on whether to keep the 3rd LB in or play a smaller guy who can cover.
Of course, big athletic guys with good hands who can also block inline don't just grow on trees.

He's been targeted a ton. He's seen a ton of poorly thrown passes and he's taken a step back this year. I think it's all effort. He needs to figure it out quickly.

I realize Auburn's TEs aren't setting the world on fire, but watching them actually being utilized after 8 years of Gus not knowing they're allowed to catch balls is a breath of fresh air.
Although maybe Harsin and Bobo realize that the lack of WR talent on the roster and have no choice but to throw it to the TE more. It's been a while since I've seen a WR corp that is so mediocre at Auburn.

Bech has 155 yards through 3 games, diddler.

Bech was a tight end in high school but is listed as a WR.

Teams are playing a little bit of defense this year. I suppose the real comparison would be to look at total TE production as a percentage of passing yards rather than look at individual stats.

Because Billingsley has been in the doghouse, but it looks like he's worked his way back in with the starters.

You know tight ends don't just have to go out for passes. They can block too...

There’s been plenty of it at A&M…
