Why has there been so little tight end usage around the league?

Was checking out various SEC stats this morning and was surprised to see that only three TEs in the SEC are averaging over 25 receiving YPG.

1. Brock Bowers- 67.8 YPG (Georgia)
2. Jalen Wydermyer- 47.0 YPG (A&M)
3. John Samuel Shenker- 36.0 YPG (Auburn)

Seven tight ends had over 25.0 YPG after week 3 last year. Just three tight ends this year. Kind of interesting.

Their teams have good QBs and have some very good WRs? Isn't that why it usually is?

We're really thin at TE and the one we do have is more of a blocker

Definitely an area to be addressed. We have two 4 star TE commits for the 2023 class

New quarterbacks. A lot of passes thrown Wydermyer's way have been way off.

Ole Miss' top 2 tight ends have been hurt. Dontario Drummond leads the SEC in catches (I think still, haven't checked)and he's technically a WR but he lines up at TE/H-Back a ton for Ole Miss.

We are throwing to the TE quite a bit it seems.

Have stats on number of catches by TE by team?

That will probably tell you is the TE position is being used little.

Now that Billingsley is back we have a nice little 1/2 with him and Latu.

Combined 7 catches for 88 yards and 3 TDs so far. They and the RBs have been utilized pretty well by Bryce in the red zone so far (6 of 10 TD passes to TE/RB).

No. Tight ends have never been used this little. That’s…the entire point.

Mullen ran some beautiful stuff to the tight ends on Saturday.

This topic offends me. Auburn got abused by Tight Ends this weekend.

I would like to see Outz used more in the run game as a lead blocker FB/H....Kid is nasty

What I really mean is production, not usage. Tight ends have been playing a bigger part in offenses each year. Everyone is looking for a Kyle Pitts or Travis Kelce.

Just seems weird that most teams really only seem to use them for short routes and red zone options this year after seeing an upwards trend in their production over the previous years

Penn State and Notre Dame seem to have at least 1 and usually 2 big, athletic pass catching white tight ends every dang season.

Mullen was sandbagging the 1st 2 games and didn't really run anything to our TEs. He finally opened it up vs Bama and I expect to see a lot more of them this year. He loves his tight ends.

Looks like he might even be going back to Utah/Tebow days w/ inside shovel passes to TEs on option plays. Haven't seen that since he's been back here.

Maybe a lot of drops? Are you looking at all passes made to TE's or just some other metric?

I remember there being some very good TEs a few years back but they weren't thrown to much.

May have to wait another 3-4 games to confirm the trend. Still early.

We don’t have Kyle Pitts this year.

Not many teams do in any given year.

I’m sure all coaches would like to have a TE with that skill set to use as a weapon.

That was a really nice wrinkle, especially given how confused our ILBs had been to that point.

He just shouldn't have run it to Will Anderson's side

And before this game we only threw one pass to a backup TE. I think he was trying to hide their involvement before the game against bama. Now their catches/yards will pick up.

I submit that UGA is only that high right now because so many receivers are hurt.
