Why do people consider DBs Saban’s specialty?

First and foremost let me start by saying that I think Saban is the GOAT.
However, I’m not sure how Saban is known as a DB guy.
Saban is an elite recruiter and this is attributed to how he assembles his staff. His coordinators always recruit well, and after a couple of titles it kind of makes recruiting a little easier.
Bama has had some talented DBs come through in his tenure, but it seems like they do even better in the pros. I’ve also seen Bama fans complain about how their DBs get so many pass interference calls and get beat deep more often than others.
Marlon Humphrey, Eddie Jackson, Landon Collins, and Minkah Fitzpatrick are all guys who were really good in college but never stood out as superstars like Honey Badger or Patrick Peterson, but they all ended up pro bowlers.
Do you guys think Saban is a DB specialist or defensive mastermind? or is he just the best recruiter/staff assembler that translates enough to win him titles?

Who knows?

He was a defensive back when he played. And he rose up the coaching ranks as a DB coach.
Your influence over the DBs is going to diminish when you’re a head coach. You’re now focused on the big picture rather than working with the DBs everyday.

Partly because he played it and coached it in some capacity from 1978-1989

Those guys never “stood out” because there were first rounders at every level of the defense. Peterson and Mathieu were clearly the best players on their starting 11, if not their entire team. Fitzpatrick won a Thorpe award though, and was absolutely a superstar in college. You’re misremembering on him.
Saban has also taken some average DB recruits and juco guys and made them into really solid players. Guys like Marquis Johnson, Javier Arenas, and Dequan Menzie come to mind.

Ahh you’re right about Fitz. He was pretty good actually. I think I was confusing him with Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick was just released by the Bengals after eight seasons.
Not "All Pro" but certainly not a bust, either.
Also, you're wrong about Eddie Jackson. He had plenty of highlights before getting injured.

He does work a lot with DBs still...probably enjoys it.

Dude is like 5ft 4in tall, that's the only position he comes close to relating to

Do you guys think Saban is a DB specialist or defensive mastermind?
as far as the difference between HB and PP, they're just other level players by nature. no one taught them.

The best coach of all time has called Nick the best defensive mind he's ever been around. There are dozens of quotes from NFL head coaches about kids from bama being ready made starters, and dozens of quotes from kids from Bama about their new defense (in the NFL) being less complex than what they ran in college.
It's a double edged sword, because he needs experienced players for it to run the way it's intended- 2011 being the perfect storm of talent and experience. The Alabama defense has been the standard bearer in the country for over a decade though, and two of those elite defenses were full of Shula recruits

Saban has really just coasted off of Belichick’s coattails for his entire career

Kind of a good question. Looks to me like WRs have been his specialty.

Has been an elite recruiter and assembler. I think his DB success was due in large part to some assistant coaches he's had in the past.

He was literally a DB coach from 1978 to 1989.

Pruitt left.
DB play plummeted.
Coincidence?

#1 Pruitt didn't coach the DBs, and #2 our DB play hasn't dropped off and #3 you're an idiot.

The simple fact has been, if you go fast on his defenses, they are merely average (with good talent). But if you go at a normal tempo and he has time to adjust and make calls, they're overwhelming.
That's not relying on talent (LSU did that with Chavis a lot, which is why they were more successful against Manziel and the other fast-tempo teams), that's relying on winning the chess match calling plays.
