Why didn’t Saban wait until after Spring ball?

He would have saved Bama all this chaos on the roster. Did he do this on purpose to ensure he didn’t get upstaged by his successor?

His heart wasn't in it anymore. He struggled to get through the end of the season.

Because Alabama football was a paycheck for him. There was never any true love like it was for Paterno or Bowden.

Ms. Terri told him she’s tired of dealing with delusional Bama fans daily and is ready to spend their days at the river relaxing on the boat and spoiling their grandbabies.

The successor would have to win 7 National Championships at Alabama to “upstage” Saban

He is allowed to quit when he wants to. In general the earlier a coaching spot gets filled, the better leading into the season. I don't think waiting would have helped Bama.

Chivalry has long been dead in college football. It’s sad to see, honestly. Nobody plays or coaches for the logo on the helmet anymore … it’s a lesser product now.

Does it magically stop the 30 day portal for coaching changes? If not, why would giving us less time to recover be beneficial in any way

Easier to hire a head coach right after the season ended. That was step 1 you know

Bama should have had the coach in waiting thing. Had he really loved the university he would have handed it off to Kirby. Bama would have had another 3-4 rings.

I think the timing is fine

Leaving now, Bama hires staff and they have full offseason to implement things

Leaving after spring ball leaves you limited time and hire selection pool is likely not as desirable

Just my thoughts

Best way to handle this:

Saban meets with the team after Auburn and lets them know he's retiring at the end of the season.

The staff has one on one meetings to get a feeling for who will stay and who will go; the staff can then add players in the portal as replacements

Saban announces he's retiring at the end of the season prior to SECCG

Byrne starts working on lining up a successor

Auburn Fans: "Saban is wrong for lying to this year's recruiting class kids that he was going to be their coach."

Also Auburn Fans: "Saban is wrong for not waiting to retire until after Spring ball so he could prevent kids from transferring."

Idiots.

Bottom line is Saban poured everything he had into the Alabama program for 17 years and accomplished the greatest dynasty in modern football. He can leave whenever the hell he wants.

Also getting a new coaching staff in place before Spring Ball/as early as possible after the season is the way to do it. The portal being open for Bama players to leave but not open for other teams is obviously problematic for Bama, but that is the new way of college football for now. DeBoer will have to overcome it, but this was not part of some master plan by Saban to screw his successor.

The man took one week after the season to figure out / make a decision on whether he wanted to/could do it any more and he made his decision. Pretty standard. There is much precedent for the GOAT retiring.
