I'm saying announce after Auburn that he is retiring at the end of the season.

That way you can get a feel for which players are leaving.

The timing wouldn’t have mattered. Players would’ve transferred out regardless.

No good time for him to do this so rip the band aid off and let’s move on.

Dumb. Alabama was trying to win an SEC Championship and a National Championship.

Who knows if Saban even knew he was retiring after the Auburn game?

What if he announces he is retiring and it causes a huge distraction and players portal out during the December portal period? That sound like something Saban would do?

Why would they portal out in December?

They have 5 days to leave after the end of their last game.

You'll have to excuse LSU fans they only were able to do that once in a decade.

Because Alabama football was a paycheck for him. There was never any true love like it was for Paterno or Bowden.

I saw the things he did in Tuscaloosa after the tornado in 2011. I’ve seen some of the work is charity has done in Alabama. I firmly believe he cared for this community and the University of Alabama.

I can tell you didn't play sports. It's hilarious that you think the team was going to spend the time it was preparing for the SECCG and the CFP dealing with the circus of Saban retiring and having conversations with players about who was staying and who was leaving and where I can go get the most money, etc. And yes, I think there would have been some that went ahead and jumped in the portal in December because they would want to secure their bag before some opportunities were gone. This is the new way in college football.

This was always going to happen and should happen after the season, which it did.

It's why pro players and coaches consistently say they aren't talking about/dealing with contract negotiations/future plans until after the season.

Saban meets with the team after Auburn and lets them know he's retiring at the end of the season. The staff has one on one meetings to get a feeling for who will stay and who will go; the staff can then add players in the portal as replacements Saban announces he's retiring at the end of the season prior to SECCG

Sadly I think you’re serious in this

Do it after the SECCG then, you have a few weeks to get everything ironed out.

Many schools do exit interviews for their players anyway, once the regular season ends. Maybe that's not a thing at Alabama and why everyone is shocked this happened.

Saban's retirement could've either been a distraction for the players or maybe they would've rallied around him and tried to send him out on top.

IIRC, Bobby Bowden retired prior to his team's bowl game and coached the bowl.
