The bigger question is why didn’t the 3rd baseman throw to first. Milam was not even trying hard to get to first

I read today that Van Horn thought maybe the SS thought he was too far to his right to make the DP so took the lead runner. (Too far to get the ball to second and then to first in time) I'm not a baseball guy or saying he was right or wrong - just what I read.

They were up by 2 so the double play was the way. any good shortstop can fire the ball to 2nd -on to 1st. Go for the killshot if it's there...ant the hitter seemed like he know he just hit a DP ball.
Both teams made a couple bad errors.
Arky seemend to get shook at the end worse than LSU.

At this point in the season Van Horn just watches from dugout. Doesn't do nothing but trust his players. Like he said. They have been coached up all year and just got a let them play ball

I've heard it suggested that they're taught to go to 3rd that if the ball is closest to 3rd and you're already facing that way.

Dunno if I buy that. From the time they were kids these players are taught to go to 2nd from the SS position, in this circumstance…. and this SS is a world class SS.
Maybe that’s what they teach nowadays, that would surprise me. But baseball is sport built on tradition, and that’s because tradition is what works in baseball.

That is accurate but with the game on the line and a sure out at second it was a mistake but they happen in split second decisions.

Just saw this on Tiget Rant. That's former LSU and big leaguer Ryan Theriot being interviewed by Matt Moscona.

This. Or even to 1st. The 3rd baseman just stood there, meanwhile Milam was jogging thinking he was out.
Yeah im not seeing this mentioned but 6-5-3 was definitely possible.
Bizzare 9th all around.

gonna throw this out there perhaps throwing to third was the correct play but not throwing from 3rd to 2nd for the 6-5-4 DP was the real mistake
Third baseman sort of just stared at the shortstop after that play as if he was thinking “dude wtf”.
Even the 7 year old Arkansas fan in front of me turned to his dad and said, “why did he do that?”.

Lost in all the other craziness...the 1st baseman deciding to get the rally started by cutting off a routine ground ball to the 2nd basemen.
Just an impressive all around melt.

All the talk about the 1b Curiel play, the SS missed double play, and the LF ball…. Let us not forget the walk to Frey…. Which eventually came around to score
That inning had all the ingredients for a blown save collapse. And Hernandez and Jones capitalized on the opportunity.

milam was 2 steps from the batters box when he threw to 3rs
maybe he didn’t think he’d make it to second or he had a bad grip and through entries to rip it it could go anywhere

I played college baseball.
Just like any other sport, you can't have too much situational communication.
It was unfortunate, but guys should have been chirping on the field...turn two, turn two...
