One big difference this year from last is that Schlossnagle doesn't have his AD anymore. Del Conte went to Texas. Between this and TCU having a down year, I can see him leaving. I think Kirk Saarloos (their pitching coach) will be a stud head coach one day, but don't be like A&M and hire a fricking pitching coach with no head coaching experience.

You’re on crack if you don’t think Butch Thompson wouldn’t take the MSU job if offered. Ming would as well. They’d get huge pay raises and better facilities.

No way we have to settle for someone like Calvi. If Cohen misses on his top 3, his next 3 are all his former assistants and current SEC coaches in Butch Thompson, Nick Mingione, and Brad Bohannan

This is correct.

I haven’t been following the search. I figured the Louiville guy was probably the guy all along. Corbin doesn’t sound realistic at all.

Didn’t Schloss turn down Texas?

Let's be honest here (and I'm a Horn), all three coaches pictured in the OP turned down Texas.

But I like David Pierce better.

Some very credible guys are pumping him to State. I agree that I'm a little surprised but then again, the stadium, AD support, and fan support are surpassed by none. He has a lot to work with and while Ron Polk has a legacy, he has the talent in place to compete for a championship immediately, and a Natty puts him in a class all by himself.

UMMMMMM.... I'd argue against that.

LSU has the same if not more support. We are also a FAR better national brand than State. We have a coach though, so it's a moot point, but think about that statement again.

I would give State the stadium advantage and a slight AD advantage (based on his recent comments and our current and projected financial commitment)

I would give the fans to LSU. Not a more educated or passionate fan base around.

And I agree that history should be included with those other 3. And if you include it LSU obviously wins by a gigantic margin

So the way I would compare the two is LSU is the better program of course, but our AD and our willingness to be the Texas A&M of baseball and build an insane stadium and pay $1.5 million for a coach...when you have our AD and our willingness to spend, we have a fighting chance for a coach like this. It very well can be a good fit for one of these types of coaches.

Baseball is treated so much worse than the other two sports, telling a coach I will pay you $1.5 million and I will give you what you need to build this. Your program. Build it. That might not win all the battles against the elite programs, but I can see where it would work better in baseball than in any other sport. Treat him like he is coaching a sport we really really want to win at. That gives us a good enough shot I am pretty confident the hire will be very impressive

Schloss has a different mindset from the time Texas was calling from what I'm hearing. He's a legitimate candidate.

Howland could have had a bigger job coming off a year of unemployment. We were actually lucky we had an in with the deal, and came in early. Our program was in dire need of a well seasoned coach with big stage success. He had the resume.

LSU will eventually upgrade Alex Box. You have to remember when LSU built the new box the money they spent was unprecedented. So other schools have now caught up or surpassed. But that’s not to say LSU hasn’t shown a commitment to investing in the program. Outside the stadium itself, LSU baseball has as good if facilities as anyone. Right now they’re actually extending the clubhouse, adding baseball only weight room, enlarged indoor practice area, etc. basically a baseball ops building.

Not to mention, when Mainieri was given an extension to 2024 two years ago, it made him, at the time, the highest paid college coach. That was until Florida signed O’Sullivan to an extension later that same year.

So I still don’t see State’s willingness to invest more in the program than LSU. They’re basically equals there at the present time. And that’s only very recently.
